We are proud to announce that the Executive Consultant, Mr. Frans Malebane, was invited as a guest speaker at the 𝗦𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗘𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 (𝗦𝗔𝗗𝗘𝗦𝗔) Workshop, hosted by the 𝗗𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 (𝗗𝗗𝗣𝗠) at the University of Limpopo.

🤠 In support of the engagement was our distinguished 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗘𝗢, 𝗠𝗿. 𝗚𝗮𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗹 𝗛𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗲.

As an alumni of the department, Mr. Malebane reflected on his career journey and shared valuable insights into the connections between 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗘𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝘆.

💡A key focus of his presentation was the role of 𝘀𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘂𝘀𝗲, 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗵𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴, as a conservation and development tool. Students and lecturers were introduced to how sustainable hunting can contribute to 𝗯𝗶𝗼𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗿𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁, 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗱𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗼𝘆𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀, particularly in communities located alongside wildlife areas.

We commend SADESA and the DDPM Department at the University of Limpopo for creating a platform that encourages meaningful dialogue between academic knowledge, professional practice and emerging opportunities within the wildlife economy.

📍The South African Black Hunters and Sport Shooting Association (SABHSSA) is proud to announce its first Skills Development Cohort — an opportunity designed to develop technical skills, promote responsible participation, and contribute to meaningful transformation in the wildlife and hunting sector.

We are looking for 10 committed South Africans who are passionate about building their skills and contributing to the future of the sector.

💡𝗣𝘂𝗿𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴:

• The proposed training is intended to address a skills gap by providing participants with practical experience and an introductory foundation in dangerous game hunting methodologies.
• The training is aimed at improving skills among emerging professional hunters and other people working in the wildlife sector.
• The training would also benefit conservation practitioners, field rangers, environmental officers and personnel dealing with damage-causing animals, including buffalo, elephant, lion and hippo.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗯𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝗱𝗲:

• Skills development and transformation in the wildlife and hunting sector.
• Capacity building for emerging professional hunters and conservation practitioners.
• Improved human-wildlife conflict response capabilities.
• Promotion of ethical and responsible wildlife management.

📚 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴.

𝗞𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗹𝘆 𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗲:

• The training does not qualify participants for a Dangerous Game Professional Hunter (PH) permit.
• Provincial legal requirements differ, and completion of this course alone would not meet all requirements for obtaining such a permit.
• The college will issue participants with a certificate of attendance, rather than an NQF-accredited qualification.
• The certificate may nevertheless be useful when participants apply for employment because it demonstrates additional training in areas such as dangerous game handling and advanced rifle handling.

This working relationship is a practical example of SABHSSA’s commitment to advancing a shared and inclusive wildlife economy, one in which members not only participate responsibly and ethically in hunting, but also support and create opportunities for black-owned enterprises across the wildlife value chain.

The discussion brought together diverse perspectives on access, participation, skills development, economic opportunities, and the collective responsibility to ensure that the future of the wildlife economy is open to all.

One of the most important conversations at the 2026 Best Practice Workshop centred on a simple but powerful reality: the future of the wildlife economy cannot be secured by working in isolation.

Facilitated by Dr Wiseman Ndlovu of the African Wildlife Economy Institute (AWEI), our BPW 2026 partner, the panel brought together leaders from across the sector to explore what it takes to build meaningful partnerships, strengthen collaboration and manage relationships that create lasting value.
