I regard myself as the most fortunate husband on this planet to have married such a fabulous personality namely Nellie Kleinsmidt-Roux today 86 years young. When we decided in 1978 that we were meant for each other, it was and is a journey that still continues today with all the loving elements. She is loved by many people who had the opportunity to study under her while she was a Primary School Teacher and Church official. Today she still teaches Karate and produces stunning results. Two masters of their ART having breakfast together, the late Muhammad Ali World Boxing Heavy Weight Champion and Hanshi Nellie Kleinsmidt-Roux, 8th Dan, at present 80 years of age, longest training, (55years) teaching and most senior women karate-ka in Africa.

She was invited to have breakfast with the late Muhammad Ali during his visit to South Africa and Cape Town during April 1993.

On the 8 August 1997, Nellie Kleinsmidt-Roux, lone black woman qualifies as Kata and Kumite judge at the UFAK All African Karate Championship in Dakar Senegal. She was a trail blazer for black women in Africa and encountered passive resistance from some elements that was opposed to the advancement of women in certain aspects of karate e.g. Refereeing.
She ignored all the remarks passed by one or two in the top structures and continued working hard. She received great support from Imtiaaz Abdullah Sensei, President of Karate South Africa and Selwyn Rhoda Sensei, Chief Referee of Karate South Africa (K.S.A).
In 1999 she qualified as the first black women to obtain full referee states in Africa which opened the way for all women to be recognised in all aspects of Karate.
