Grading Lineage in BJJ

I never would have imagined what a blessing is was going to be for myself and my brother to start our BJJ journey with Roger Gracie all those years ago.

It was around 2 decades ago that we first met Roger and begun to grade under him in London.

A number of years and a lot of hard work later, I'm INCREDIBLY proud of my brother, Nicholas Gregoriades who became Roger's very first black belt, one of the greatest figures in the sport ever.

I received all my belts up to brown directly from Roger, but after relocating to Cape Town it meant logistics were a challenge to receive my black. It was a special moment 9 years ago when my own brother awarded me with my black belt, continuing the legacy from Roger.

It's both an honour and a privilege for me to be able to continue this BJJ lineage and heritage to my students at Maximillian Jiu Jitsu.

Kids Grading Day – Jaguars & Pumas (Ages 7–12)

We’re excited to announce our upcoming Kids Grading Day for our Jaguars and Pumas classes (ages 7–12)!

Grading is an important milestone in every child’s Jiu-Jitsu journey. It’s a chance for students to demonstrate the skills, discipline, and progress they’ve been developing on the mats. More than just earning stripes or belts, grading is about building confidence, reinforcing fundamentals, and celebrating growth.

Over the past few weeks, our Jaguars and Pumas have been working hard—improving their technique, focus, and understanding of Jiu-Jitsu. This grading session gives them the opportunity to showcase that progress in a structured and supportive environment.

Parents are encouraged to attend and support their kids as they take this exciting step forward!

What to expect:
• Demonstration of key techniques
• Assessment of discipline, effort, and attitude
• A positive and encouraging environment
• Recognition of each child’s progress

We’re proud of every student stepping onto the mats and can’t wait to see them rise to the occasion.

Maximillian is proud to be a longstanding member of the Subconscious Jiu Jitsu Association.

Subconscious Jiu Jitsu (SJJ) is headed by 4th Degree Black Belt duo Brent Burniston and Nicholas Gregoriades and provides oversight and support to academies spanning the globe.

SJJ is accredited with the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation which means that Maximillian students can participate in any of their official competitions and that belt levels awarded are recognised internationally.
