On those days when you're cold or tired, discipline is what's going to get you out of bed and make you put on your gym clothes. It's a skill worth mastering as it will lead you to your end goal more than fluctuating bouts of motivation ever will!

There's never a bad time to show some appreciation, so we're gonna take this opportunity to say thank-you to our coaches for all the time an energy they've put into us. Thank you for pushing us, believing in us and putting up with our banter! We appreciate you all!

It's the first of spring and it's a great time to take stock of your year so that you can finish 2023 strong! Have a look back at what you set out to achieve this year...

Have you reached your goal yet or are you still on the way there?

What has worked for you, and what hasn't?

Did something side track you or are you ready for a new challenge?

If you want to stay on track in reaching your goals, it's always a good idea to regularly evaluate your progress, readjust your plan if necessary and keep going!

Rope climbing isn't usually a workout you can do anywhere, but finding a way to get more climbing into your fitness regime can offer some key benefits:

Core:
Due to the instability and movement of the rope, it requires you to engage your core muscles, which helps to create stability and keeps you centred.

Back:
One of the biggest muscles involved in the activity is the latissimus dorsi, known as the lats, which cover the middle and lower back and play a major part of spine movement. You'll also be firing up smaller muscles of the upper back as well.

Legs:
While it's possible to climb using only your upper body, another technique is to use your legs for additional strength and stabilisation, which builds your hamstrings.

Arms:
Pulling your body weight up against gravity requires major muscle fibre recruitment from your forearms and biceps.

Improves Grip Strength:
Grip strength is an essential part of numerous exercises, and research indicates it can even be used as a measure of overall health, especially as you age. Strong grip requires a certain level of muscular force, and not just in the hands and forearms.

Helps Build Confidence:
There's a significant mental component to rope climbing. If you haven't climbed like this before - as you progress and boost your ability, it can bring a wave of confidence.

At Caracals our main focus is high intensity functional training and we offer that over 3 different class programmes:

Main functional fitness classes:
These are held 4-5 times a day and cover a variety of disciplines: endurance training, strength & weight training, gymnastics and mobility.

HIIT classes:
These are held 3 times a week and mainly require body weight or light weights to give you a full body burn.

Bootcamp classes:
These are held every week day at 9am and focus on a scaled down version of our main functional fitness class, still giving you the same workout but with less technicality.

Patience is an attribute possessed by most successful people. In this day and age where everything is instant and on-demand, the things that truly hold value require time. Achieving your goals takes time - it's a practice in discipline and focus. Don't sway off course, you WILL reach your target and you will become a better person for it!

The purpose of our training programmes is to help you with your day-to-day functional movements. Being able to move, bend, push and pull in the right way with correct form is what is going to benefit your body the most throughout your life, and especially as you reach your golden years. It is important to lay those foundations down as soon as possible so that you don't end up with stiffness and pain later down the line.

Why is it so important to focus on core strength?

Injury Prevention
Injuries can be caused by everyday tasks. Maintaining a strong core can help you avoid all types of injuries, including muscle strains, joint sprains, disk protrusions, and even fractured or bruised bones.

Reduces Back Pain
Having strong core muscles creates a system of support for your spine. Everyday movements like household chores can cause back pain if this support system can’t meet the demands of those activities. A strong core goes a long way in preventing or reducing back pain in day-to-day life.

Improved Balance and Stability
Walking down a set of stairs, getting dressed, or walking on slippery or icy surfaces challenge your balance and stability. Good core strength you can approach all of life’s obstacles from a place of sturdiness and security, while avoiding injury.

Improved Posture
Poor posture is a result of weakened muscles—especially in the core. With a strong core supporting good posture, your body is in alignment with less strain placed on supporting structures like muscles, ligaments, and disks. Better posture even makes for easier breathing during exertion.

Improved Lifting Efficiency
Whether it’s lifting groceries, kids, pets, or Takealot packages, we lift more in our daily lives than we think—not just while working out. When we lift objects, the core provides rigidity to the spine to prevent excessive strain on the muscles, ligaments, and disks. With strong core muscles, you can lift objects more efficiently, reducing the risk of injury.

Athletic Performance
If you play any sort of recreational sport, maintaining a strong core will help you perform at your peak. Athletic movements such as running, jumping, kicking, and dancing all require energy transfer between the upper and lower body that flows through the core.
