High Performance Cape Town based Swim Coach Hilton Slack makes a bold statement:
There's a group of children no one really talks about in swimming.
Not the babies starting lessons.
Not the competitive swimmers chasing medals.
The seven to thirteen year olds.
The children who never learned to swim.
Or the ones who learned years ago... and slowly lost the skill because life got busy, lessons stopped, and the water became unfamiliar again.
And that's the scary part.
Most learn-to-swim programs are designed for very young children and often taper off around age six.
After that, many kids fall through the cracks.
Too old to start over comfortably.
Not confident enough to join stronger swimmers.
We see it all the time.
A child stands at the edge of the pool pretending they're "too cool" or "not interested," when really... they're afraid.
Afraid of putting their face in the water.
Afraid of being embarrassed.
Afraid because everyone assumes they should already know how to swim by now.
But swimming is a life skill.
And it's also a skill that fades when it's not practiced.
We've watched strong young swimmers return after only a month away from the pool looking like beginners again.
So imagine the child who had lessons at six... and hasn't been in the water since.
At the exact age children begin exploring independently around rivers, dams, beaches, pools, holidays with friends. Many are entering dangerous water environments without confidence or real swimming ability.
That's why Swimlab Swim School exists.
To create a space for the children who were overlooked.
The late starters.
The nervous swimmers.
The ones who just need someone patient enough to meet them where they are.
Because it is never too late to learn a skill that could one day save a life.
What are you doing in your program for the seven to thirteen year olds?
