SOUTH AFRICA’S TEENAGE CHESS STAR TOPPLES AN ITALIAN GRANDMASTER! 🇿🇦♟️🔥

South Africa has another remarkable young talent making his moves on the world stage! 🌍👏

Cape Town chess star Jan Karsten produced a superb victory at the 46th Chess Olympiad in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, defeating Italian Grandmaster Lorenzo Lodici in Round 6.

And this was no ordinary win. Lodici carried an international rating of 2573, a full 187 points above Jan’s rating of 2386. Yet the young South African held his nerve, trusted his preparation and secured the victory against one of Italy’s strongest players. 🧠♟️

Jan carries the title of International Master, or IM, which is the second-highest title in world chess, just below Grandmaster. He became South Africa’s youngest-ever International Master at only 14 and is currently ranked second among the country’s active players. 🇿🇦

His victory proved particularly important, helping South Africa earn a tremendous 2–2 draw against a powerful Italian team containing three Grandmasters and another International Master.

You do not need to understand every chess move to appreciate this: a South African teenager sat opposite a highly rated European Grandmaster and beat him. What a moment! 🙌🏆

Congratulations, Jan. South Africa is immensely proud of you! 💚💛

Today, we celebrate the rich and diverse heritage that makes the Western Cape—and South Africa—so special.

Our province is home to many cultures, languages, traditions, stories and communities. Each one contributes a unique piece to the beautiful picture of who we are.

Just like on a chessboard, different pieces may have different roles, but together they create something greater than any one piece alone. Our differences are not what divide us; they are part of what makes our shared heritage so rich.

Today, Western Cape Chess celebrates our diversity, our shared history and the unity that connects us.

May we continue to learn from one another, respect where we come from, and build a future where every heritage has a place.

Happy Heritage Day! 🇿🇦❤️

IM Jan Karsten has had a memorable run at the 46th FIDE Chess Olympiad in Samarkand, taking on some of the strongest opposition on Board 1 for South Africa. 🇿🇦♟️

His Olympiad campaign has included clashes with GM Kirill Alekseenko, rated 2656, and GM Nils Grandelius, rated 2603, before Jan produced a standout result in Round 6 against GM Lorenzo Lodici of Italy, rated 2573. Jan secured the full point against Lodici, contributing to South Africa’s hard-fought 2–2 draw against Italy. 🔥🇿🇦

It has been a valuable test for Jan against elite Grandmaster opposition, and his victory over Lodici was a particularly special moment in his Olympiad campaign.
