BUCKLEY

During the Sardine Run, Garrick follow a similar pattern to the main shoal’s migration as we head into mid-winter, moving from the Western Cape to the warmer waters of KwaZulu Natal. Here they’ll spawn in estuaries, rivers and bays along the coast between September and November, before adults make their way back to the Cape.

Highly attuned to their environment, they don’t mind big surf, low light, or dirty water conditions to hunt in and rely heavily on their lateral line to zone in prey.
A sort after species they are a gentlemen known for their clean fights, the Garrick is one of the most targeted species during and after the Sardine run by shore anglers.

Live bait fishing
Open shore, of rocky areas with deep waters, opening between the banks, harbours and estuaries. Eastern cape and KZN. Areas known for having large numbers of Shad and or Mullet near estuaries are best. Morning and evenings are most productive although they can be caught throughout the day on the turning tide. One of the most effective ways to target them is with live Caranteen, Maasbanker, Mullet and Shad and be sure to stick to your bag limits for these species.

Lure Fishing
The other attraction of targeting Garrick is that you can land them on spinning gear on a range of baits from bucktails, paddles, spoons, plugs, topwaters and stickbaits and deliver an exceptional challenge when hooked.

Loomis and Franklin “the name that stood the test of time”

HEAVY METAL SHAD
If you’re going the artificial route the S-bend and T-Spoons are great options. Selecting a spoon will depend on the distance you’re fishing, water colour and your gear but a general rule of thumb in terms of colour is to throw a silver spoon in clear conditions and if you’re fishing whitewash areas or stained conditions switch to a coloured spoon or one with red wings like the T-Spoon.

Shad are pelagic so they are always on the move making covering water essential to pattern where they are on the day. You will have to experiment with your retrieve and cadence keeping note what triggers a bite when fishing a spoon. Targeting the shore break and or gullies is highly effective. This zone holds baitfish, and Shad frequently hunt in these turbulent, oxygenated waters.

Alternate your retrieve speed ever couple of casts until you start getting bites, by doing so you are covering different depths and speeds, which will enable you to determine how and where exactly they are feeding on the day. You can also move along the beach after a couple of casts in one spot, covering a larger area.

TOP TIP
A short piece of steel can be used with a clip to attach the spoon BUT in our experience, you will trigger more bites without it. However, if you are planning on going this route, be prepared to get bitten off occasionally.
