Where to target kob:

The key is keeping your lure close to the bottom. Cast slightly up-current, allow the jig to sink naturally and work it slowly through the contour. Gentle lifts, controlled drops and regular pauses often trigger the bite.
Think injured baitfish — not a lure racing back to shore. If you’re not occasionally feeling sand contact, you’re probably fishing too high in the water column.

Targeting blacktail from the surf requires finding the right structure.

Scattered reefs, rocky patches and broken ground are prime areas to focus on, as blacktail often feed around these areas and use the reef for cover.

Kobtober in Full Swing in False Bay
With Kobtober in full swing in False Bay, one small bait ended up making all the difference.
The session started the night before, with a few livies being netted for the morning. Among the mullets was one lonely Maasbanker — kept with a simple thought:
“Here’s my kob bait for tomorrow!”
Little did we know, that one bait would end up saving the session.
The morning started in complete darkness, with one rod rigged for sliding while the second was used to work small chokka and sardine baits across the first bank.
The first rod soon bent over, but the fight didn’t feel like a kob. A shad came to the beach, was photographed quickly and safely released, as they are currently out of season.
Then came two quiet hours with very little action.
That’s when the lone Maasbanker came back into play.
Rigged as a small ball bait and placed right on the edge of the bank, it didn’t take long before the rod got absolutely flattened.
After a solid fight, a beautiful 61cm kob came to the beach.
A few quick photos and she was safely released to fight another day.
Sometimes the bait you least expect ends up being the one that produces.
