What did we do this week in pilates? And why?
The spine twist exercise. It is one of the best ways to increase the range of motion in your upper body.
This exercise helps stretch the back and torso while maintaining a central vertical axis through the body.
Sitting trunk rotation:
When you rotate to one side while in a sitting position, the side abdominals (obliques) generally act as the prime movers. However, if they acted alone, they also would make the torso bend forwards since they are spinal flexors as well as rotators. Appropriate activation of the spinal extensors is necessary to keep the spine vertical. Correct contraction allows the spine to rotate without bending forward or arching backwards.
It’s fundamental for creating optimal athletic performance and preventing common injuries to the back.
