Why Beach Riding Kills Hub Motors (And Why Mid-Drives Win the Sand War) 🏖️🚲⚡

Since we started building electric fat bikes back in 2013, we’ve put virtually every motor configuration through real-world testing along South Africa's coastlines.

After more than a decade of building and servicing e-fatties, one hard truth stands out: if you love riding on the beach, motor placement is everything.
Here is why mid-drive motors dramatically outlast hub motors when sand and saltwater enter the picture:

🌊 The Problem with Hub Motors on the Beach:
Hub motors sit directly in the center of your wheel, just inches off the ground. When riding on damp beaches, your tires constantly throw wet, abrasive sand directly onto the motor shell and axle seals. With the motor submerged in the spray zone with every wheel rotation, it is strictly a matter of time before salt water finds a way past the seals, causing internal corrosion and motor failure.

🛡️ The Mid-Drive Advantage:
Mid-drive motors sit high and dry in the middle of the frame at the bottom bracket. Positioned well above the spray zone, they stay clear of direct wet sand hits and tides, keeping your core drivetrain protected for years of coastal cruising.

Whether you’re commuting through urban streets or conquering coastal dunes, picking the right drive system for your environment is critical to making your build last.
