In trying to become the parents we needed, many of us are determined to break generational patterns.

We want our children to feel safe, heard and comfortable with us. But being approachable does not mean allowing disrespect.

Your child can disagree with you. They can joke with you. They can speak openly. But they should still understand tone, boundaries and respect — no matter how old they are.

Healing from your own childhood does not mean removing structure from theirs.

If we excuse disrespect in the name of closeness, we may actually be teaching our children that love means boundaries can be ignored.

You can be soft and still be firm.
You can be close and still have standards.
You can break generational trauma without breaking respect.

“I love you enough to be approachable, and I respect myself enough to have boundaries.”

Sometimes, without even realising it, parents can get pulled into a quiet competition with other parents.
It can happen at school, within families, between friends, or even through what we see online.
Someone else’s child gets something, wears something, goes somewhere, achieves something — and suddenly we feel the need to make sure our own child has the same… or better.
Not because our child asked for it.
Not always because they need it.
But because somewhere inside us, we don’t want to feel that our child has “less”.
That is where parenting can quietly become blurred.
What feels like generosity can actually be comparison. What feels like giving your child the best can sometimes become an unconscious attempt to prove something to other adults.
And while the adults are competing, the child is learning.
They may begin to associate their value with what they own, what they wear, where they go, or whether they have more than somebody else.
They may start believing that being “better” means having better.
Over time, that can create entitlement, insecurity, constant comparison and a need for external validation.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with giving your children beautiful things, experiences and opportunities when you can.
The question is simply: Why am I giving this?
Is it because it genuinely benefits my child?
Or am I trying to make a statement to somebody else?
Our children should never become the scoreboard for competition between adults.
Give generously. Celebrate your children. Enjoy what you are able to provide for them.
But teach them that their worth will never be measured by whether they have more than somebody else’s child.
Parent from love — not comparison.

After 9 years in practice, I’ve reached a point of clarity about where I believe my work can make the greatest difference.

I’m entering a new chapter at The Coach South Africa™, with my practice now dedicated to women and teenagers aged 15–30 (happy to do up to 35 years of age if there is a need and/or request)

These years can be some of the most defining — filled with change, pressure, relationships, expectations, uncertainty, ambition and the ongoing journey of discovering who you are.

My focus will be on supporting you through mental and emotional wellness, confidence and self-worth, relationships, conflict resolution, study and work-life management, young marriages, premature divorces, daily routines, sleep patterns, habits, addictions and creating greater balance between your mental, emotional and physical wellbeing.

This is not about becoming someone else.

It is about understanding yourself more deeply, strengthening the way you think, feel and respond, and learning how to build a life that feels balanced, intentional and authentically yours.

Your safe space. Real conversations. Real growth. Real you.

Here’s to the next chapter. 🤍
