DURBAN, GET READY TO RUN THE EDGE OF AFRICA!
Entries Open Tomorrow for the Inaugural Indian Ocean Marathon Durban
Limited to 5,000 runners, the exciting new coastal running event launches entries at 12pm on Tuesday, 20 October 2026.
Durban, South Africa — Lace up, gather your running crew and get ready for something special! The inaugural Indian Ocean Marathon Durban is set to bring a fresh wave of excitement to South Africa’s running calendar, with online entries officially opening tomorrow, Tuesday, 20 October, at 12pm.
Taking place on Sunday, 4 April 2027, this exciting new event will celebrate Durban’s spectacular coastline, vibrant communities and growing passion for running. With a choice of three distances, there is a challenge for seasoned ultra-runners, ambitious distance runners and those simply looking to enjoy an unforgettable race-day experience.
Runners can choose from the 50km Indian Ocean Ultra, the 30km Indian Ocean Challenge or the 10km Indian Ocean 10. The 50km and 30km races will start at 5am, followed by the 10km at 6am.
The race village will be based at Sunkist Lawns, opposite Moses Mabhida Stadium, where both the start and finish will provide an exciting focal point for runners, supporters and spectators.
The proposed route promises a spectacular journey through Durban and its northern coastal suburbs. Starting at Sunkist Lawns, runners will travel along the M4 corridor and across the uMngeni River into Durban North, continuing through La Lucia towards Umhlanga. The return journey will follow the coastal roads, passing the Hypermarket and heading back along Durban’s famous beachfront promenade to the finish line at Sunkist Lawns.
The event is a joint partnership between B-Active Events and Orcas Running Academy, combining extensive event-management experience with a passion for developing runners and growing the sport in the community.
“Durban has everything needed to create an exceptional running experience. We want to showcase our coastline, bring people together and build an event that runners will look forward to every year,” says Damian Bradley of B-Active Events.
Prodigal Khumalo of Orcas Running Academy adds: “This is about inspiring people to challenge themselves, enjoy the journey and discover what is possible when our running community comes together.”
With entries limited to just 5,000 runners, athletes are encouraged to be ready when registration opens.
