One of the easiest and most targeted species along our east coast. Known as Elf in the Western Cape and Shad in KZN, this ultra-aggressive species is around the entire year but your chances of landing the biggest Shad of the year is when the sardines arrive. What makes them fun to catch is they’re usually around in large numbers and will keep biting as long as they’re in the area.

When to target them:
If you’re planning on going, prime times are before sunrise and at sunset which makes it a great before and after work species to target. You can easily target them from sandy beaches, areas that have a combination of rocks and sand or off piers, they will come right up to shore at times making them a great species for the whole family to target.

THE SHAD SEASON HAS ARRIVED!



The shad run is officially underway, and the Loomis & Franklin Super Shad Hooks have been flying off the shelves for good reason.

Early mornings = whole sardine presentation.

Fishing a full sardine often gives you a better shot at bigger shad, while also opening the door to quality by-catches like kob and garrick.



If the action slows down, I’ll switch over to a belly fillet bait. The extra scent trail and flash in the water can make all the difference when fish are being picky.



Targeting BIG grunter or snapper salmon?

I generally remove the float for a more natural presentation and improved bait movement.
