SPECIAL SKIS for SPECIAL PEOPLE - Tony Bothes, well known river canoeist and all round sportsman, a recent amputee having come through a life threatening illness, is determined to paddle again. So far he has been back on the water in the back of a K2 canoe with the help of friends. Not nearly back to full physical strength yet, he never thought he would ever be able to steer a single kayak again. Having customised surfski’s for amputee’s before I convinced him to try one of our new entry level TIDE single skis, customised for single foot steering.
A very nervous Tony took to the water this morning and an emotional Tony came off the water after a long easy paddle around the Umgeni estuary, easily mastering the single foot steering for the first time. Whenever I get involved in somebodies journey like this it leaves me feeling humbled by their courage and the satisfaction of having designed a great entry level surfski. The TIDE single’s stability boosts confidence but still has the glide feel of a K1 through the water. A short video of his first tentative strokes getting used to the steering with one foot.

APEX 2 - Double surfski. Fresh off their first Freedom paddle surfski race around Robben Island in the Cape, Dave Imrie and Amanda Seidler took on the daunting KZN South Coast surf in the Aliwal Shoal Leatherback Rum Surfski Challenge in their new APEX 2 double ski. Testimony to the user friendliness of the APEX 2, they negotiated the 6ft surf with ease both in and out but had a great glide and cruising speed cover the distance in glassy smooth fast offshore conditions.

FREEDOM SURFSKI CHALLENGE (Open ocean race around Robben Island in the very exposed Table Bay). Held today on a national holiday,Freedom Day. Massive record entry of 400 paddlers.
Paddlers report tough challenging conditions. Braving the conditions for the first time, Dave Imrie and Amanda Seidler finishing strongly in their new striking all black APEX 2 double ski. Getting a message from them thanking Point Watersport for their new boat that served them well in the rough conditions.

A special ski for a special customer. A full carbon PHANTOM single ski adapted for amputee Gavin Smith. The gutsiest paddler I know has paddled an adapted HORIZON X and APEX 2 double skis for single foot steering for a number of years. Progressing now to being able steer with a prosthetic leg, giving him improved balance he can now move on to a faster competitive ski. He is excited at the prospect of being able to leg drive now and go a lot faster. It has been both humbling and a privilege to have travelled this journey with him back into more competitive racing.

Tiffany Amber Koch, seen here in action last weekend winning the Reef Challenge event in Durban on her colourful DD3 SKYFALL IRON LV single surfski, rounding off final preparations for her challenge for the ladies surfski title at the SA Surf Lifesaving Championship. Extremely bad luck last year saw her finish in close second in both the single ski and double ski title races.

The South African Surf Lifesaving Championships starts next week. Great pictures of members of the Durban Surf Team in the surf on their SKYFALL IRON LV single surfskis doing final skill sessions in preparation. I have watched this young group for a while. Focussed, dedicated and a well managed team. It is easy for Point Watersport to back them to really do well, confident that they have also chosen a winning brand of surfski.
