Yoga is less about standing on your head than it is about learning to stand on your own two feet.

At the Durbanville Yoga Centre we teach Hatha Yoga, which is a type of yoga based on energy. Hatha Yoga consists of:
- asanas (postures with the mind's attention)
- pranayama (breathing practices designed to warm and cool, energise and calm)
- relaxation techniques (meditation)

The end result is to create body and mind so steady and harmonious, that they are resistant to time and disease.

πŸ•ŠοΈ In Loving Memory of Sandra πŸ•ŠοΈ

It is with great sadness that we share the news of Sandra's passing.

Sandra was more than just a yoga teacher. She was the heart of our studio and a friend to so many. She created a space where everyone felt welcome, whether they had been practising for years or were stepping onto a yoga mat for the very first time.

One of the things so many of us loved about Sandra was that she was unapologetically herself. She taught, lived and connected with people in a way that was uniquely Sandra. She touched many lives through her yoga, her wisdom, her humour and her authenticity.

She loved yoga, all things spiritual, meeting new people and bringing them together. Many friendships were formed through the community she built around the studio, and many of us found ourselves on courses, retreats, workshops or trying something new simply because Sandra suggested it.

Our hearts go out to Christopher, her family and all those who loved her.

A few of us are currently trying to honour Sandra's wishes of keeping the studio, classes and upcoming retreat going, and we will share updates as soon as we can.

If you would like to be kept informed, please send the page a private message with your email address so that we can keep in touch.

Rest peacefully Sandra. Thank you for all that you gave to us. 🀍

Moving into your Yoga Practice βœ¨πŸ§˜β€β™€οΈ

As you give yourself your full attention, become aware of what you feel, as though you are shining a light on yourself.

What am I feeling, what am I thinking? Allow it and breathe with it.

Effortlessly keep your intention in your body β€” notice the temperature of the air on your skin and the clothes on your body.

Observe the effortless pause between the breaths. Each time your breath turns the corner, there is a pause preceding the next breath.

Each breath arises out of this pause.

Feel the sensation in the throat, rather than in the nose. Inhale for 6 counts, hold for 4 counts, exhale for 6, hold for 4.

Now bring your awareness to your feet, your toes, soles and heels. Expand this awareness through your legs to your torso, arms and head.

Allow your body to be just as you find it.

Now practise Viloma (split breath) on inhale and exhale. Sense the oxygen and prana available to nourish your cells and organs.

Move into your asana practice…… ✨

May you be peaceful and joyful. May your senses always enable you to celebrate the mystery of your presence here in the universe. πŸŒ™

πŸ§˜β€β™€οΈ Sit to begin your Yoga Practice…

Allow your breath to be an anchor for your consciousness.
Attend to nothing else.

Let your legs fall into the ground like rain falling into the earth.

Your consciousness is now gathered, concentrated and turned inward as you chant the Aum, the eternal sound heard in all natural phenomena:

β›ˆοΈ the thunder
🌊 the roar of the ocean
🌳 the wind in the trees

Now be aware of the Muladhara Chakra, the energy centre at the base of the spine in the subtle body.

This is the energy of your physical body, your safety and survival, your right to be here.

Scan your physical body and breathe into the centre of any tension.

Now feel the tension melting, flowing down your arms, through your elbows, swirling through your palms and hands and releasing into the earth.

Rub the grooves between the small bones on the back of your hands to regulate blood pressure.

Practise Yoni Mudra to withdraw from the outside world.

✨ Now begin your asana practice.

✨ As you sit quietly, waiting to begin your yoga practice… ✨

Imagine gently drawing back the energy you’ve given out over the last few days.

Pull back the energy that has gone into encounters at work, and into time spent with family and friends β€” the emotional pull of others. 🀍

Now imagine a circle of protective energy around you…
like a thick ribbon of light, emanating from your heart and wrapping around you like a cocoon.
A shield that allows in the energies that belong, and keeps out those that don’t.

Bring awareness to your body β€”
the sides of your waist,
the centre of your chest,
the centre of your head.

Begin your breath:
Inhale for 8…
Hold for 4…
Exhale for 8…
Hold for 4…

As you exhale, gently narrow the breath β€” like the nozzle of a hosepipe β€” directing your prana (life force) to where it is needed most.

When you stand up again, picture soft swirls of light leaving the soles of your feet and flowing into the earth 🌿

Send energy into the earth, and enjoy this exchange.
