ENTRY LEVEL IS ONLY AVAILABLE TO NEW MEMBERS WHO ARE ENTERING EQUESTRIAN SPORT FOR THE FIRST TIME. CURRENT MEMBERS MAY NOT DOWNGRADE.

Jumping - Non-Graded Pony Rider up to 60cm, Non-Graded Jnr/ Adult up to 70cm
Eventing - PR/Jnr/Adult - EV65
Showing - Newcomers Classes and Grooms' In-hand Classes
Western Mounted Games - Level 0
English Mounted Games - Lead Rein, Trotting Pole & Non-Vaulting classes
Tentpegging - Novice Riders, first timers Jnr/Snr only for 1st year
Vaulting - E Grade
Working Equitation - Level 1- Lead Rein, Level 2 - Introductory

Today, we say a heartfelt farewell to Hannes van Aswegen a man who left deep footprints in the SAWMGA community.

Hannes was one of the very first to take part in Western Mounted Games. He competed himself, later became a judge, and was one of the founding members of SAWMGA.

He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Our hearts go out to his family and friends during this difficult time. 💔

His heart, determination, and partnership with his rider have inspired not only our association, but riders across South Africa and beyond. Every stride reflects years of dedication, teamwork, and a deep love for the sport.

This incredible feature in Equestrian Life Magazine is more than just a cover — it’s a celebration of South African talent, passion, and perseverance in the western mounted games arena. We are deeply thankful, honored, and humbled to see one of our own recognized on such a remarkable platform.

VDB Performance Horses & Equestrian Centre is a new, full-service facility in Bapsfontein founded by Frederick van der Bijl — a seasoned Show Jumping and Polocross rider. Their mission is to provide premium stabling, expert training across disciplines, and to buy and develop top performance horses.

The Van der Bijl family—Frederick, daughter Cora‑Lee (Level 3), and son Luan (Level 3)—are active in Western Mounted Games. Frederick competes in Levels 2 and 3 and is passionate about WMG’s Event's rapid growth (from ~200 riders in 2015 to nearly 700 in 2025). Seeing huge potential in the sport, VDB has committed to supporting this international WMG event — and we look forward to their continued involvement as together we grow the sport worldwide.
