These rifles have their roots in target shooting and was designed for full-bore target shooters in an era when surplus war rifles such as the Lee-Enfield, Lee-Metford, P14 and others were used. The Musgrave facility[1] (located in Bloemfontein, Republic of South Africa) where they were built housed a giant gunsmithing concern. RSA actions and earlier hammer-forged barrels were manufactured at Lyttelton Engineering Works. By 1989, Musgrave employed 220 people and produced 6,000 hunting rifles per year over a ten model range. Musgrave's product range diversified to include shotguns, sporting equipment, fuel locking devices and other items. Though Musgrave was an ARMSCOR subsidiary since 1971, the name finally disappeared under Denel control,[2] in August 1996. The end of this era came about when Musgrave's Bloemfontein facility was closed down and some of the equipment and personnel relocated to Lyttelton Engineering Works (LEW) where hunting rifles under the "Vektor" (Vector) name were built for a short while, alongside the R4 assault rifle, Z88 pistol and other small armament which forms DENEL's main focus.[3]
The dormant Musgrave name was revived by a private owner and new semi-custom built Musgrave rifles from the town of Ermelo, Mpumalanga, RSA entered the market.

South Africa’s first 8.6 Blackout is built on the Musgrave M21x Beast.

The 8.6 Blackout uses a standard bolt head, so it shares the same group as a 6.5 Creedmoor and a .308 Wi******er. That means you can order the 8.6 Blackout today and add a 6.5 Creedmoor or .308 Win barrel later without changing the action or bolt. Both extra barrels are made to the same tolerances, so you simply re-zero and continue.

A short 12–14 inch 8.6 Blackout barrel with a silencer is highly effective. Heavy 285–300 grain subsonic loads run at roughly 1,050–1,150 fps, while lighter supersonic loads reach 1,800–2,200+ fps. Most of the powder burns early, so the short barrel loses very little velocity. The silencer reduces noise and blast while the heavy bullet still carries solid energy at typical hunting distances.

You can keep the 8.6 Blackout as your quiet bushveld setup and use the 6.5 Creedmoor or .308 Win barrel for longer shots or different conditions — all on the same M21x.

South Africa’s first 8.6 Blackout has been built on the Musgrave M21x Beast.

Here’s why this setup makes sense for hunters:

The 8.6 Blackout launches heavy 285–300 grain .338 projectiles at roughly 1,050–1,150 fps in subsonic form, or lighter 190–250 grain bullets at 1,800–2,200+ fps when loaded supersonic. The short case keeps overall length the same as a .308, so it feeds cleanly in a compact magazine.

A short 12–14 inch barrel is highly effective with a silencer because the cartridge is designed for it. Most of the powder burns early, so you lose very little velocity compared with a longer barrel. The silencer adds effective length and reduces noise and muzzle blast dramatically, while the heavy bullet still carries excellent energy and momentum at typical hunting distances.

On the M21x Beast you get controlled feeding, a short bolt throw, and the option to run this as a dedicated quiet setup or pair it with another barrel later. It is built for hunters who want one precise shot with minimal disturbance.

What the customer sees is a finished Musgrave.

What sits behind it is years.

The MBR and the M21 did not arrive in one drawing. Both started as an idea on the bench. Then parts. Then fit. Then it failed. Then it was built again. Hours. Learning curves. Range days that ran long. Nights in Ermelo when the team stayed because one more check still mattered.

Gunsmiths at the bench. Engineers on the drawing. Sales staff who carry the story. Dreamers who would not let the idea die. Owners who stayed with it when it was still ugly. Colleagues in other engineering shops who cut, harden, machine and deliver so we can build.

That work is not only Musgrave. There are many manufacturers in this country who get up every day and do the same quiet work. We see you. We salute all of you.

And yes. Some of us still dream. A Musgrave handgun in the hand. In the footsteps of Vektor. Not a promise. Not a launch. Just a thought that belongs on Heritage Day, when a workshop is allowed to look forward as well as back.

On this day we thank every tradesman who still builds things that last. Steel. Wood. Tools. Hands. A nation is not only written. It is made.

Range day.

The Musgrave MBR does what it was built to do. Made in South Africa. Solid. Simple. The man behind it does not need to explain a thing. The laugh at the end says enough.

Take your Musgrave to the range. That is where you get to know it.
