Some of the process. This okuma metaloid came into the shop today and immediately I knew exactly what the inside would look like. With these reels along with the daiwa BG grinder reels, it’s common to see some corrosion but it’s not the end of the world. A little bit of elbow grease and some normal grease and they are as good as new.

Absolutely love working on these BGs. So simple yet so strong, definitely worth while having one of these in your arsenal especially if you’re a kayak angler.

These two Talica 16II’s had been sitting for couple months and when they were brought out to be used again, the main bearing in both of them had ceased and 2 of the bearings in the ones spool had also gone rough.

Replaced all the bearings and they’re off to go nail some couta. 🤙🏼

LINE ROLLER BEARING

Line roller bearings are usually the first thing to go on most reels that are used in salt water. Not only from being sprayed by a wave or being submerged while wading out to cast but even when reeling in. Your braid/mono is wet and going through your line roller. Over time this can cause your line roller to cease and next time you hook a fish, the friction caused by your line roller not turning, will cause your line to part. So be sure you always rinse your reels properly and spay a bit of multilube every now and then to keep your roller running smooth.

Blood, salt and gears.

This Trinidad was a very time consuming one. From getting it apart to cleaning off all the corrosion built up over the years. Replaced every bearing with some fresh stainless steel bearings. What a great outcome giving this reel a fresh new start.!!

Got to love the BG series. Solid reels that will last you a lifetime however like most things, maintenance is key!!

Took a good few hours to get this spinfisher right again and was so worth it. A couple new bearings and hours of cleaning each tooth on every gear and she’s as good as new.

Had to over grease the reel a bit to try prevent future corrosion, overall a good little challenge this week.

Sometimes all it takes is changing one bearing to make the biggest difference.
