It is very sad news for South African and International Fly Fishing, friends and family of an incredible man, Tom Sutcliffe, who passed away recently.
Tom's books taught us so much on how to fly fish for trout. They are entertaining and informative but kept simple and real. There are tricks in there that we will use forever and remember him every time.
Platon was lucky enough to have got to know him and a highlight was when he filmed the Fly Fishing & Fly Tying EXPO that Gordon van der Spey organised so well. He didn't want to be interviewed per se but preferred to just have a chat about fly fishing. He spoke so well that we ended up using his voice for the narration.
His passion for all things fly fishing and the creativity of all the people featured in this video runs so true for everything he believed in and supported. We shared a passion for photography as well and he was very intrigued by the video-making process as with so many things in life.
He will be sorely missed by many and remembered often on trout streams all over. Rest in peace, Tom.

Sterkies is all about shots. Casting dry flies to fish feeding off the surface is arguably the most popular aspect of fly fishing and at fabled Sterkfontein Dam you will get more surface action in a few days than most anglers see in a decade. To make the most of this brilliant destination, Lucky Bastards has partnered up with FlyCastaway for an epic week’s guided fly fishing for dry fly munching smallmouth yellowfish.
Fishing 4 days with the exceptional FlyCastaway guides on their 3 Fusion 17 boats specifically outfitted for this fishery, means getting to the best areas of the dam, at the best times, with the best in the business. Utilising 3 of their boats, that’s 2 anglers per boat.
We can accommodate a group of 5 guests for a 5-night comfortable stay at the Qwantani Resort overlooking the dam. Dates 5 to 10 March 2023.
Book now to join Lucky Bastards for some of the best sight fishing for yellowfish in South Africa. Send us a DM or e-mail us at [email protected], for the full brochure and costs.

UPCOMING TRIPS
Every year on the Breede River, from September into October and November, after a long winter, the fishing shifts into another gear on the Breede River, with warming temps and seasons bringing Kob and Grunter back into the system in good numbers, looking to feed.
Tides, weather patterns and moon phases play an important part of this fishery, and the Bastards have prime picked a couple of slots over these months that we know will give our guests the best chance to cross paths with the returning residents, basing ourselves at the Karoolskraal Flyfishing Camp, located on the most prime stretch of the Breede River.
Book now to join Lucky Bastards for some of the best saltwater fly fishing in South Africa.
Where – Karoolskraal - Arguably one of the best saltwater fly fishing destination in South Africa, the Breede River is an incredibly special place and Karoolskraal Saltwater Fly Fishing Camp is the jewel in the crown. Situated in a sheltered hollow on a private farm only 200m from the water with excellent fishing spots right in front of camp. In less than five minutes from booting up you can target Spotted Grunter tailing on the mud flats or head to the rocky ledges for Kob and Leervis.
Accommodation - is in comfortable canvas tents, with one person per tent with a stretcher bed. The groups are made up of six anglers per trip.
Meals and drinks will be had in the communal central area. All you need to bring is towels, sleeping bags/pillow, drinks and fishing gear.
Added Bonus - While we will be right there to give you tips and some excellent fly tying demos, we also have a guest angler joining us, legends on the Breede fly fishing scene. Together we will be giving tips and advice on how to fish, the best tides, when to fish for what and what flies to use. We will be fishing alongside you if you have any questions or need a hand in any way. We will also have our cameras at the ready to capture you in action and get that special shot of your memorable fish.
