As the first inland club winners of the Lipton Cup in 1984 We wish Seal Point well in their preparations for this years competition
Seal Point Yacht Club - Challenger
There is a feeling amongst top sailors who have lifted the Lipton Challenge Cup in victory that unless one has started preparing for a Lipton Challenge early, all effort may be wasted!
At this early stage, a team from Seal Point Yacht Club on the Vaal Dam, appears to have a head start and have been beavering away with their sights set high.
To win the coveted Lipton Challenge Cup one needs an inordinate amount of time simply preparing the boat before spending loads more time on the water fine-tuning the boat and crew. To win this challenge is a marathon - not a sprint.
With the ORC handicapping system being used for the second year in succession, the game is pretty much thrown open with only a betting man predicting a winner prior to the start of the first race. But having started their preparations early, the Seal Point Yacht Club, based at Manten Marina on the Vaal Dam, could well be a good early punt for the betting types.
This team, headed by the wiley Alex Schon, have chosen the Fareast 28R ‘PhatAss’ (RSA-4714) as their trusty steed. Schon is known to work hard on every aspect of preparation when he’s serious about winning, so others may have some catching up to do. He has found sailing glory primarily on inland waters, although he has previously won the Cape to Rio race overall on handicap in 2003, and line honours in 2011 as helmsman. So he’s equally at home on flat water as he is in the open sea.
With Seal Point being the first club to challenge the Royal Natal Yacht Club defenders, one will only know once all challenges are in whether their choice of yacht is an inspired one.
The crew is as follows:
Alex Schon - skipper
Marko Seitz
Robert Edwards
Erwee Lourens
Deon Viljoen
Petro Spies
Theirs may be a tough assignment as history has rarely been on the side of inland Clubs when it comes to winning the Lipton Cup overall. The first Gauteng Club to win it was the Transvaal Yacht Club in 1984 when Ewald Sternagel took them to victory on an L26.
Thirty-five years later Mike Hayton & David Rae lifted the Cup for Witbank Yacht & Aquatic Club in 2019 when sailing a Cape 31.
It’s early days yet, but as these guys are preparing well in advance of the July event, they may well have stolen a march on all other prospective challengers.
Alex Schon is “King of the Vaal” and HE will be striving to be the “King of Lipton” this year.
