We had a belated but festive celebration of one of our Master Athlete's amazing achievements last night! Congratulations, Richard on placing third in the African Masters Athletics Track and Field Champs for the 200m!
For most 40+ year olds, just sprinting without tearing a hammy is a major feat! Achieving the KZN Masters Medal Standard time in your first ever 200m on the track is phenomenal!
"I wouldn’t term it a “superb” result, but for me I was very chuffed as a novice with a less than ideal build up to get to the start line. My next challenge will be to see if I can improve by 0.38 seconds and achieve the South African Masteres Athletics Medal Standard time for my age category of 32.0 seconds. While there were five entrants in the 100m, the fourth entrant in the 200m scratched from the race. Thus, in the end, with only three running, I was guaranteed a bronze medal in the 200m (65-69 years old race) just for having the courage to turn up and give it a go! Survivorship bias! Still, as an older novice and given all the injuries, I was still really pleased with my race on the day. A big thank you again to Coach Chris White, Sports Physio Garth Oliver, and Biokineticist Nicky Oliver for helping me do this."
