Modderfontein Bowls Club will be holding their 88th Annual General Meeting on Saturday 19th September 2020 to consider business and to elect a new committee.
The club was established in 1932. This was thanks to the enthusiasm of two well-known Modderfontein bowlers, Walter Birt and Horace Leah who played a great part in starting the club. They were also amongst the team who supervised the construction of the main green, which was named Birt-Leah in 1956 to honour the two men.It is said that to provide good drainage, the Birt-Leah green was laid on a foundation of broken beer bottles – one can imagine the devotion of the prospective bowling members shown in emptying the bottles!
Modderfontein Bowls caters to all bowlers needs, whether experienced or beginners. The Club plays competitive bowls in the Ekurhuleni District Leagues and has two Mens and one Ladies Premier League teams and a number of other teams playing in lower leagues.
“Tabs in” social bowls is held on Tuesday and Thursday mornings and on Saturday afternoons and Sunday mornings (when inter-club competitive bowls is not being played). Twilight games are played once-a-month on a Friday evenings, followed by a light supper.

A friend of mine who is a golfer, asked me if playing bowls was just as "sterile" as golf under COVID-19 restrictions. We both commiserated on the fact that we were unable to socialize and use our club facilities after a game.
This got me thinking that Modderfontein bowlers can at least enjoy the beautiful gardens that surround our greens while we play a game. Our gardens have been maintained by club members and green staff during the lockdown and are looking very beautiful at the moment.
Modderfontein Bowls Club has much to offer bowlers of all levels. Have a look at our website on www.modderfonteinbc.co.za for more information.

Bowling under COVID-19 is a bit surreal with all the precautions of having your temperature taken, filling in a safety questionnaire and having to play two rinks apart. The bowls is fantastic though.
Modderfontein's greens are in great condition and we get to play pairs all the time. Playing with 4 bowls is an excellent way to get back into bowls and also to hone your skills.
Please remember that you need to pre-book if you want a game and visitors are always more than welcome. Please phone Janet on 083-654-1272 or Carol on 011-608-4483 to book. If you would like to learn more about starting to play bowls, contact our coach John on 082-440-1769
