Whilst boxing in South Africa, I was offered a 12 round title fight in England at middleweight. I was boxing at a weight division lower, at light middleweight. I accepted the fight. I was only 20 years old and had mo clue how much this fight was worth. My coach told me my purse would be £2500. This was a big fight. The fight would be televised by BBC Sports. The fight was shown in all of the United Kingdom and Europe. I took this fight on 3 weeks notice because my team mate Giovanni Pretorius could not make the weight.
After the weigh in we went back to our hotel. I ate some food and walked down yo the bar area. Now remind back to when we flew out for thus fight, a lot of people who i did not know also traveled with us, on the same flight and they stayed in the same hotel. So down by the bar I dit and relax. All of a sudden a wrll known South African promoter walks in and sits next to me. He said "how do you feel Ruben". I said I feel good thank you. He continued with his small talk and then he asked me "hiw much are you getting for this fight".
I was honest, I said £2500. He just looked at me and at that moment my coach walked in at he was about 10 meters away. He called me. He said "Ruben come here!! I walked over and he said what does th%^&* want. I told my coach he wants to know hiw much my purse is. My coach said "what did you say to him". I told him im getting £2500. My coach said ok go up to your room. Do i did that.
Many years later as I grew older I realized that my coach and this promoter stole a lot of my money me. In excess of £10 000. Its even lirevif you ad the sponsorship money that he was supposed to pay me but didn't. Boxing is very viscous physically. Plus there is a lot of dishonesty going on in boxing that people don't know about.
This promoter irgsnised the fight. The British promoter would have paid the South African promoter fir his services but being greedy, him and my coach stole 80% of my purse money. I coukd have died in that fight fir £2500 and my coach took 25% also from the £2500. It is a disgrace but it is still going on today.

While at an amateur boxing show recently, i spoke several people. One of the guys I spoke to was there with one of his boxers. This coach spoke sense regarding boxing. I asked him if he also boxed and he said yes. I said what's your name? He told me. Now my mind is very sharp. When he said his name and surname, I said "I remember you. I never saw you box but I know you were an amateur boxing champion and me and you were supposed to fight in the Gauteng (provincial)senior championships in 1995 but you pulled out. He said "No it can't be me. Maybe you mean my bother". I asked "what weight were you". He said he was welterweight. I said yes me too, 67 kilograms. I was 17 years old and this guy was about 4 or 5 years older and more experienced. We were senior boxers. I was in my prime years of my amateur boxing. This guy refused to admit it. I could have respected him if you would just admit it. How crazy is that, that i would meet this guy face to face with someone i was supposed to fight 30 years ago.

My book is really doing well in the sales department. I recently sold another copy in the UK. After 9 years I think it's time to write a part 2. It will be just as interesting if not more than the first book. It will be about me leaving Britain against my will and going back to South Africa where I will be taking part in fights. I will share the details of those fights and other interesting stories. I will also be exposing certain people by telling the truth.
For example boxing at a big and famous casino in Johannesburg. Im boxing as a former world champion, All Africa champion and British masters champion and I received R5000 for a 6 round fight. The promoters will hate me but I'm not lying. Im just telling the truth. Imagine, you could die in that ring for R5000. They promoter was my employer and I was the employee. That is how they treated me. They should have paid me a lot more money. If you as a boxer ask for more, they'll tell you ok never mind we will use another boxer. R5000 is slave money. In my first 6 rounder in England I got paid £2500 in 2001. That is decent money.
So enjoy the current Broken Dreams The Untold Truth. Stay tuned as I start writing the new edition.... Evette Meyer Kurt Groenewald

Broken Dreams The Untold Truth is a great read. It gives the reader hope and evidence that good people are around us. Most of the promoters who promoted me want nothing to do with me after my book was published. These are promoters who made a lot of money from my fights. These are promoters who ive worked with and got along very well. Today they refuse to talk to me. I'm happy because after 9 years I'm still selling copies. The book will not be removed. All I ask from the readers, please leave an honest review about the book. Tell us what you thought about this book. I will give it a month and copy and paste the best review here on this page:
