I mentioned a few weeks back that I was battling with my health.
So I thought its time to share, hold onto your socks ๐งฆ or scroll on by.๐
About 3 months ago I started to get pain in my left hip. As usual I turned to my myofascial tools to work it out. It didnt help and it only got worse. I lived with the pain hoping it would ghost me like that I guy I met on tinder, but alas it stayed around and got worse. The one Saturday driving to a friend, I screamed to the man to pull over as I had excruciating pain running down my leg, I just had to stand. I put the seat back and lay down and cried all the way to our destination. Sunday I told him we going to the ER because there was no way in hell I was going to experience that again!
They drugged me, they pumped like 6 bags and vials into an IV and left me in the room to get higher than Snoop Dog. Dr returned and said how you doing? Answer was, I was as high as kite now but still in pain. MRI was done the following day, sitting was so sore I was constantly having to stand to get some relief.
Results arrived the next day and I had 2 ruptured discs and 3 bulging in my lumbar spine. ๐คฎ
Aaah happy days!! Doc said no yoga and I sobbed all the way home. Booked an appointment with the neurosurgeon which I could only see like 4 weeks later because he is the best. I went to an incredible physio for 5 sessions. She was recommended to me by one of my yoga students. She is based in Woodmead and her name is Fiona Lamberti, I highly recommend this lady, she knows her stuff, plus also does myofascial release. We got on like a house on fire! ๐ฅฐ๐ Plus she let me swear as she did her work on my body.๐
First thing she picked up was that my hips were incredibly out of alignment. My left hip was pulling to the right. She stuck her fingers in my groin and released a deep spasms that I could never had got to with my tools. That sucked, but the relief was worth it. She stuck needles in my glute, into the muscles along my spine and gave me some fabulous shock treatment therapy. She did so much work on me but it just wasnt helping the bigger issue. My left thigh had gone numb and slowly started turning into a fizz disco with constant pins and needles. I had incredible glute pain and I refused to take the meds the doc gave me during the day. I was overloading my body with muscle relaxants, anti inflammatories and pain meds that kicked my ass. The one morning in yoga class I was slurring so much from the meds I took the night before, my students said I sounded drunk. So the daytime drugs stopped. I only took them before bed if I needed them.
My appointment for the neuro finally arrived. I saw the Dr and he looked at my scans and said 'You have the most unremarkably small tear in the cushion between you discs'. This causes some of the inner gel to leak out and touch the nerve, hense the awful pain I was experiencing. Not only does it cause pain but the entire abdomen muscles and the surrounding areas go into protection mode and the muscles lock up and everything goes into painful spasms. I did so much myofascial release to undo these spasms and it was so sore, but necessary to get some relief. About a month ago I was doing a session and I cried the entire way through. I was so upset that my body wasn't healing itself and I felt like an absolute failure. ๐ I preach all the time about how yoga and myofascial release can heal and I couldn't fix this!!! ๐ญ๐ฑ
I went for numerous body talk sessions with the incredible Caroline Linton and was made aware of a lot of limiting beliefs I am carrying. I went to Nazeema Tierney for a yoni steaming session to embrace my feminine energy and to heal from sexual and family trauma. I went to the incredible Audrey Osborne Wood for spiritual and energetic healing. I continued on with my yoga without aggravating my back and spent hours on my tools trying to heal myself.๐ฎโ๐จ
After doing EVERYTHING I could possibly do, my physio and friends helped me come to the realization that medical intervention is the last resort and very much needed!!! ๐จ
Yesterday I was booked into the hospital to have a lumbar epidural and facet joint infiltration. The medication injected, surrounds the lumbar discs and help numb the pain giving your body time to heal without constantly being in agony. It was a quick in and out day procedure where they put me under and drilled 10 holes around the spine to fill it with the magic mootie. ๐
My man was amazing and treated me like a queen the whole time! ๐ฅฐ
Kudos to him for putting up with my grumpy ass over the past few months as the pain really made me a miz cow. ๐คฃ Thanks boo Jean-claude Renaud Louw โค๏ธ I love you.
Today is a slow day, a bit of discomfort which is managable. I am going to spend at least an hour on the tools in the loft today to try release some of the surrounding muscles and my quads which are so sore from the past week of yoga classes.
The amazing thing is, about ten years ago I had one bulging disc and the pain was 100 times more then it was now. And I owe that all to my core!!! ๐ช My strong ass muscles have created the most incredible internal back brace to support my spine. I did not stop the yoga and I will not stop the yoga. It keeps me strong and most importantly keeps my mental health on the straight and narrow. Yoga is my medicine! ๐งโโ๏ธ ๐ซ
We still not sure what caused the tear, Dr said it could have been from the weight training the man and I had been doing. So that is on pause for now. I plan to focus on healing my back, taking more time for me and not doing deep forward folds and twists in yoga that will aggravate the discs. ๐ค
I have to remember at my heaviest weight I was 140kgs!! This spine of mine has put up with a lot!! I have since lost almost 30kgs and the journey is ongoing. The less weight I have on my discs the better, so strength and healing is the focus moving forward. ๐ฅฐ
Not only does the body require healing but my heart, soul and inner child. These are the Louise L Hay definitions of each vertebrae.
โข L1Probable Cause: Insecurity, a craving for love, and a need to be lonely; fear of rejection or leaving things behind
โข L2Probable Cause: Feeling stuck in childhood pain, hopelessness, or being unable to live in the present moment
โข L3Probable Cause: Sexual abuse, deep guilt, self-hatred, or covering up past traumatic experiences.
โข L4Probable Cause: Financial insecurity, fear of career/future, feeling powerless, or rejecting one's own sexuality.
โข L5Probable Cause: Insecurity, difficulty with communication, anger, and an inability to accept pleasure.
All of the above relate to me in massive ways!
I want to thank each and every soul that has helped support me through this journey, and who continue to support me. ๐๐๐
The love and kindess I received yesterday was overwhelming. ๐คฏ๐ฅฐ
I am truly a blessed human being to be surrounded by such remarkable people that truly, love and care for me. โค๏ธ
Thank you to my students who have been patient and kind, who have allowed me to moan and avoid doing certain poses as I guided them verbally. Love really does make the world go around!! โค๏ธ
So onwards and upwards I rise, learning and healing and doing the deep inner work in order to become a better human, inside and out. ๐ฅ
And remembering how far I have come and allowing myself to have some compassion for where I am now and trusting where I am going. โฌ๏ธ๐ฅณ
Thanks to you all for reading the encyclopedia of Tamsin's backache if you have made it this far!!! ๐
๐คฃ
Sending loads of love to you special souls, remember healing is never linear, it is a constant journey, definitely worth travelling.
