The pool cover is coming off. For most families, that means water safety season has already started, even if summer still feels a few weeks away.

A child who was confident in the water in April can be rusty by October. The best time to check in on that is now, before the pool is in daily use, not once the holidays are already underway.

Every strong swimmer started somewhere, and for a lot of children, that starting point is hesitant and unsure.

Progress happens in stages. First comfort in the water, then confidence, then the actual skills, and eventually the independence to swim on their own. There is no fixed timeline. Every child moves through it differently, and our instructors meet them exactly where they are.

Why don’t we rely on floaties to teach children to swim?

Because our goal is not simply to keep a child above the water. It is to help them develop the skills and confidence to understand what their own body can do in the water.

Swimming lessons help children learn to float, breathe, kick, move, change position and recover. These are skills they can develop and carry with them as they become more capable swimmers.

Flotation devices can be useful in certain situations, but they should never replace active supervision or be relied on as a way to teach swimming. Properly fitted life jackets are also important when children are around open water.

At Sam’s Swim School, we focus on building real water skills, confidence and capability, at a pace appropriate for each child.

A lesson might not look like much from the outside. Inside the pool, every minute is doing something: warming up, practising a skill, repeating it until it becomes natural.

That structure is why children progress steadily instead of being pushed too fast, too soon.

A floatation device helps, but it does not replace supervision. Drowning can happen quickly and quietly, so it is never safe to assume you would hear a child in trouble. And confidence is not instant, it is built lesson by lesson, at each child's own pace.
