The South African Council for the Architectural Profession (SACAP) is a regulatory and governing body for the architectural profession in South Africa.

Our history

The Architects Act 1970, Act 35 of 1970 established the South African Council for Architects on 1 March 1971. This legislation, with amendments, remained in force for almost 30 years. The Architectural Profession Act 2000, Act 44 of 2000 was published on 1 December 2000 and came into operation on 26 January 2001. ABOUT HUGH SIMPSON

Hugh Simpson is the Chief Executive and Registrar of the Architects Registration Board (ARB), the United Kingdom’s regulator for architects. Since joining ARB in 2020, he has led wide-ranging reforms to architectural education, introducing a more flexible and outcomes-based framework for the profession.

Under his leadership, ARB has also championed greater accessibility to the Architects’ Register and increased diversity across the architectural sector. He has overseen the implementation of a mandatory continuing professional development (CPD) scheme for all architects and secured mutual recognition agreements with counterpart regulators in countries including Australia, New Zealand, the United States, and Canada.

Hugh brings extensive experience in professional regulation, having previously held senior leadership roles at the UK’s General Medical Council and the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC).
