Little beauty on a tiny spinner.
Dry fly fishing up a pretty run. I chose this one for the camera position as it was open water and offered an unobstructive view, not because I thought it held many trout. I only raised one small fish, which I missed.

I have just returned from hosting a trip to the Drakensberg to catch wild brownies on dry. The river was in fantastic condition and everyone enjoyed the good food, banter and excellent fishing. Numbers of fish from 8 to 17 inches were landed by all. Most fish came out on parachute dry flies # 16.
I fished a # 16 Mahogany coloured grizzly parachute with great success and switched over to a Gordon Rose spinner during the late afternoon when there was a heavy blue dun spinner fall.
The Gordon Rose spinner uses Puglisi fibre for the wings which are deliberately tied thick to aid floatation and allow the angler to track the fly easily. It floats like a cork and the fish love it. This is the best spinner pattern I have ever used! The man is a genius! An old guide from the big horn river in the US.

18 Inch Brownie from long pool, Bushmans River.

We have just returned from a fantastic weekends dry fly fishing in the Berg.
Conditions were perfect with the stream flowing strongly and crystal clear. Hoppers, ants and other low riding flies on 6x scored well.
Fish were all rainbows of around 8 inches, some of about 5 inches and a few of 11 and 12 inches. No browns or yellows.
I have been tying and sorting out my dry flies for small streams.
My top ten flies are:
# 16 Simulator, I like to tie it on a standard shank hook. It is a more compact fly then and is a better imitation of an Adult Caddis. You get the elk hair caddis guys and the stimulator guys, I have just never fancied the elk hair caddis, Sorry Al Troth!
R.A.B. Who knows what it imitates but fish love this fly.
On quieter water, an F-fly.
Dave's hopper In #14 or 12.
Spotter, foam beetle # 14,
Rubber legged spotter ant # 16.
Lime Trude, with or without Calf tail as a wing. A great attractor fly.
Royal Wulff in smaller sizes 14, 16.
And now, a fly that is relatively new to me, the Rackelhanen, this is where poly propylene and gink out float CDC every time. This boy is a polypropylene only fly! Poly prop does not absorb water and the floatant make it virtually unsinkable.Pull it under and it pops to the surface.
Griffiths Gnat/cluster midge, # 16 to 20.
10 flies is a rather large selection of dry flies for generally opportunistic, non selective fish. I do also carry specifics in case I encounter a hatch that has the fish locked in, but they are not needed that often.
Tomorrow, My top 6 nymphs for freestone streams.
