Again, like most other recent Merc arrivals, a new four-cylinder petrol with a mild-hybrid system and just about every daft word Mercedes could think of – all fitted in the name of added efficiency. There’s a Nanoslide cylinder coating, Conicshape cylinder honing, a segment charger with flow connection… all you need to know is that it’s capable of coasting at high speeds with the engine switched off, features an electric compressor for the turbocharger and promises very high efficiency.

The new Audi RS7 Sportback will use the same oily bits with the recently revealed RS6 Avant, meaning it will feature a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 producing 592 HP (600 PS) and 590 lb-ft (800 Nm) of torque and featuring a 48-volt mild-hybrid system.

The 2020 Audi RS Q8 is the new flagship in the German carmaker’s growing portfolio, and only the second Q-model to receive the RS badge. It’s a badge that sets some seriously high standards, too: we’ve not long driven the magnificent RS7 Sportback and RS6 Avant, and each sets a tall bar for their bigger sibling to meet. If the RS Q8 is to hold its own, it needs to be a super-SUV.

The current BMW M4 Coupe is in the twilight of its life as BMW readies an all-new model to take on the boisterous Mercedes-AMG C63 Coupe and the Audi RS5. Does this mean that the M4 has lost its edge and that you should consider newer rivals instead? Hardly.

The second-generation Mercedes-Benz CLA250 debuted earlier this year, but news of its angry AMG brother was notably absent. That is, until this past weekend when AMG unveiled the CLA45 (at the Goodwood Festival of Speed) with the new reigning specific-output champ of production turbo four-cylinder engines. The new 2.0-liter is called M139, and in this application it makes 382 hp along with 354 lb-ft of torque. It can do more, too, but we’ll get to that in a minute.
