Itās not just about pushing the belly up and outward - but more about allowing the diaphragm to do its job so the ribcage can expand in all directions.
Diaphragmatic breathing should feel slow, quiet, and controlled. The chest and shoulders stay relatively relaxed while the ribs gently widen on the inhale and soften on the exhale.
Start simple: inhale through the nose, ribs expand. Exhale slowly, ribs relax.

ShiftMethod
ShiftMethod is a Biokineticist and movement therapy practice focused on helping people move out of pain and rebuild confidence.
We combine functional movement, education and nervous system-based methods to create lasting, sustainable change.
Shift Series: The Shift
It starts with awareness - Finally listening to what your body has been asking for.
Then comes the decision - To stop brushing it off and choose differently
Ownership follows - Realising no one is coming to do the work for you.
Commitment shows up in the quiet moments - days you donāt feel like it, but you do it anyway.
Strength is built slowly - not just in your body, but in your belief that you can keep going.
And then it happens - youāre doing the things you love doing. Moving freely. Living fully.
Thatās the Shift.
Featuring Frankie š¾
Chronic pain isnāt always a tissue issue.
Often, itās a nervous system that hasnāt downregulated.
If your body feels constantly tightā¦
If stretching gives temporary relief but nothing sticksā¦
If you always feel like youāre bracing ā
Start with your breathing.
Diaphragmatic breathing is one of the most powerful entry points to reduce muscle guarding, lower pain sensitivity, and restore movement capacity.
Recovery first. Then we build.
Keep an eye out for the next post - Iāll explain exactly how we perform diaphragmatic breathing inside ShiftMethod.
As a Biokineticist who has been through it - Iāve learnt to not just look at symptoms or exercises in isolation.
I look at the system as a whole.
Sleep.
Stress.
Recovery.
Movement quality.
Education.
Because the body doesnāt adapt under constant pressure - it adapts when it is supported.
This approach may seem controversial in a world that glorifies doing more, pushing harder, and ignoring signalsā¦
but this is how we build bodies that last long term!
This is the Shift.

ShiftSeries:
5ļøā£Strength - Is built through your Shift.
Strength isnāt all about a before and after. Itās a feeling. A sense of steadiness inside your body that grows from every focused and intentional rep.
Itās when effort stops being something you do and becomes something you feel.
ShiftSeries:
4ļøā£ Commitment
Anyone can start⦠very few stay consistent.
Commitment is the difference between pain and progress.
This is where we start to build strength, not just physically but mentally and emotionally.
You are the SHIFT.

4ļøā£ Commitment - Consistency creates your Shift
Commitment is the part no one celebrates⦠the repetitions, the discipline, the days that feels slow.
But this is the part where everything changes.
Where your nervous system rewires, your strength starts building and your confidence grows.
Itās the daily choice that creates the Shift.

ShiftSeries:
3ļøā£ Ownership
Taking control of your Shift.
Ownership is clarity. Realising youāre not powerless, and your body is not the enemy.
This is where the shift becomes intentional and personal. Step back into control.

2ļøā£ Decision
The moment yoh choose to Shift.
You donāt need to have it all figured out - you just need to decide youāre worth the effort.
ShiftMethod Series:
1. Awareness ā The Start of the Shift
You canāt fix what you donāt understand.
Itās not about overthinking or fearā¦itās about noticing.
Noticing the tension, the fatigue, the imbalance ā
and realising itās been asking for you to pay attention.
This is where your Shift begins.
10/11/2025
It always starts with Awareness - that realisation that youāve been living around your pain instead of moving through it.
A year ago, running terrified me.
Not because of the distance ā but because I knew the pain that would follow.
But hereās what Iāve learned: healing isnāt about never feeling pain again.
Itās about understanding it, working through it, and rebuilding trust with your body.
Every flare-up. Every small win. Every moment you choose to show up - thatās the work.
And through that workā¦
