Honoured. Humbled. Inspired.
I was deeply honoured to be invited to represent Kathak at the PIO (Person of Indian Origin) Connect, hosted by Indian High Commissioner His Excellency, Shri Prabhat Kumar India in South Africa (High Commission of India, Pretoria).
To have my contribution towards the preservation and promotion of Indian Classical Dance, Kathak, recognised is both a privilege and a responsibility that I hold close to my heart. I was grateful to be given a platform to air my views on how important it is for Traditional Kathak to be part of the South African Indian diaspora robustly. We have stories to say and dance in its traditional form must be part of our expression.
What makes this particularly meaningful to me, is the acknowledgement of my contribution to preserving Kathak in its authentic and traditional form, while remaining true to the artistic and cultural values passed down through generations.
Kathak is far more than a dance form. It is a living tradition, rich in history, discipline, storytelling, philosophy, and cultural identity. Every lesson I teach, every choreography I create, and every performance I present is guided by a desire to honour this legacy with integrity and authenticity.
Through Darpan Dance Studio- Kathak Specialists , I remain committed to ensuring that traditional Kathak continues to thrive and remains accessible to future generations. This recognition serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of preserving our cultural heritage and inspires me to continue creating opportunities for all aspiring dancers to experience the richness and depth of this remarkable art form.
I am sincerely grateful for this acknowledgement and for the opportunity to contribute to the preservation of Indian culture within South Africa's diverse cultural landscape. Also, highlighting how far we have come as South African Indians since 1860, with all the suppression and struggles our forefathers endured, we held on to our connection to India through music, dance, art culture and traditions.
