By now, you've probably seen these photos a hundred times already.
Let's talk about what actually matters.
Police confirmed that an armed citizen engaged the gunman, forcing him to retreat and buying precious time for people inside the restaurant to escape.
The pistol? An FN Five-seveN.
Predictably, the comments were full of:
"5.7 is the king of handgun cartridges!"
Not so fast.
The 5.7 does have some genuine advantages:
• Very low recoil
• Flat trajectory
• 20-round magazine capacity
In an open area like this parking lot, those are all real benefits.
But the 5.7×28mm was designed around the P90 PDW, not a handgun. Put it through the Five-seveN's 4.8-inch barrel and you lose a significant amount of velocity—the very thing the cartridge depends on for optimal terminal performance.
Ballistic gel testing consistently shows that quality 9mm JHP ammunition performs just as well, and often better, than 5.7 JHP.
So if the defender had been carrying a G***k 19, a CZ P07, or any 9mm pistol he was proficient with, the outcome likely wouldn't have been much different.
The more interesting takeaway is something else entirely:
Red dots on carry guns.
People love saying, "Defensive shootings happen within 3 metres."
Reality doesn't care.
In the 2022 Indiana mall shooting, the defender Eli Dicken stopped the attacker with a G***k 19 from roughly 45 metres, scoring 8 hits out of 10 shots.
This incident also appears to have involved engagement distances of over 30 metres.
Long-distance defensive handgun shots are rare—but they do happen.
If you're carrying a pistol today, a quality red dot optic is one of the biggest performance upgrades you can make.
Provided you've actually trained with it.
If I had to choose an EDC today, I'd still pick 9mm.
The 5.7 is a capable cartridge, but when you factor in terminal performance, ammunition availability, pistol options and cost, the 9mm remains the more balanced choice.
One last question...
A suppressed FN Five-seveN is enormous.
How on earth was this guy concealing it?
