Wits Fencing Club

The 21st and 22nd of October saw some of our fencers competing in the last provincial tournament of the year, the Gauteng Closed Championships. There, we showed that the Wits fencing club has been going from strength to strength this year - we managed to bring home not one, but TWO provincial medals from the tournament!

Congratulations to Natalija Cerimaj for a bronze in Senior Women's Foil, and VERY special congratulations to Andrea Cabanac for her gold in Senior Women's Foil!

Andrea is now ranked number 1 in Gauteng for Senior Women's Foil until the next fencing season. What a legend!

Congratulations to Frankie and Andrea for both winning bronze medals in Men's Foil and Women's Foil respectively! Well done to all our champions who went to the GFA ranking this weekend and gave it their all. Some spectacular bouts were witnessed 💪

On Saturday we held an inter-club foil tournament where we challenged the best and brightest in the Gauteng foil scene! With generous help from the Gauteng Fencing Association, Jo-Ann Saner and our referees Justin Logie, Andrei Kovrijnykh and Alex Raizman, the event was a huge success.

We managed to raise R2000 for our club so we can continue to sponsor our talented fencers to compete at provincial and national tournaments, and keep Wits on the fencing map in South Africa.

It was a daunting experience to challenge all the skilled fencers, but look at their smiles and excitement! (The photographer caught Mike off-guard😂)

Wits managed to bring home THREE whole medals - bronze in Senior Women's Foil, Gold in Senior Men's Saber and Bronze in the Women's Team Epée.

Fun was had and even more was learnt. We are once again motivated to improve and challenge. 👊🏼

Well done to the comrades who represented the Wits Fencing team at the WC Open tournament.

It was a rough weekend. But we managed to pull through. New bonds were made and further strengthened. Our spirit are even higher lifted. We return, excited for future tournaments.
