Today Shihan Lee Jardine and Wits club members, Mr Gabriel Katz, Ms Asanda Msomi & Mr Mzati Chikoko (unfortunately had to leave early) attended an Exchange Event hosted by to meet Olympic Gold Medalist Haruka Kitaguchi.

It was an event to meet and strengthen sporting ties between South Africa and Japan.

The Association thanks the Embassy of Japan for this special opportunity and we wish Ms Kitaguchi all the best in her training going forward!

It is with great sadness to be informed of the passing of Ikegaya Shihan.

Jardine Hanshi says that he was O’Sensei’s training partner and was known for his incredible punching prowess. He was also the 2nd Shihan to visit South Africa with Inoue O’Sensei in 1985.

He was also a sushi chef by trade and even showcased his skill to our members back then.

The South African branch is forever grateful for Ikegaya Shihan for sharing special times together.

We welcome new students in 2026 as we celebrate our 50th Anniversary. Edward Jardine Hanshi established Yuishinkai Karatedo and Ryukyu Kobujutsu Hozon Shinko Kai South Africa in 1976 with the blessing of his teacher Gansho Inoue O’Sensei.

Beginners classes will start in February. We would love to have you be a part in this special year of training and celebrations!

Earlier this month, Branch Chief Lee Jardine Shihan was invited by the Finland Ryukyu Kobujutsu Branch to share his expertise during a weekend seminar.

The programme was led jointly by Jardine Shihan and Finnish Branch Chief Lasse Leino Shidoin, with the event generously hosted by .

The South African and Finnish branches have long enjoyed a special relationship, rooted in the close friendship between Edward Jardine Hanshi and Ilpo Jalamo Shihan—both students of Gansho Inoue O’Sensei—who established Yuishinkai Karate and Ryukyu Kobujutsu Hozon Shinko Kai in their respective countries.

One of the key aims of this seminar was to continue strengthening and developing the important ties between South Africa and Finland.

Throw back to the Kumejima group trip to the 2019 International Ryukyu Kobujutsu seminar. The birthplace of Taira Shinken Sensei, the founder of Ryukyu Kobujutsu Hozon Shinko Kai. The group was lead by Edward Jardine Hanshi (then Shihan).
