The Klerksdorp Marathon Club extends its sincere apologies to all athletes who witnessed today's distressing incident at the Vlakvark Run where a giraffe sustained a leg injury after colliding with a fence.
Attending veterinarian Dr Benton van den Berg and management of Faan Meintjies assessed the animal and made the difficult decision to euthanise it on humane grounds.
We understand that several runners were shaken by what they witnessed, and we welcome them to reach out for support.
This is the first wildlife related incident in the event's 20 year history and we are engaging Faan Meintjies management to review our environmental safety measures.
