You think you’re placing a bet.
But who are you really placing it with?
Right now, millions of South Africans are using online platforms that aren’t licensed locally.
No oversight. No protection.
No guarantee you’ll ever see your money again.
Some of these sites look legit.
Clean interface. Easy access. Fast sign-ups.
But behind that?
No accountability.
If something goes wrong... there’s no one to call.
No process. No protection.
That’s the difference.
Responsible gambling isn’t just about how much you spend.
It’s about where you spend it.
Because not all platforms play by the same rules.

In South Africa, sport isn’t just a game.
It’s a moment.
From packed township pitches…
to living rooms during a Springbok test…
to full bars on a Saturday afternoon.
We don’t just watch.
We argue.
We predict.
We feel it.
And somewhere in that ritual…
Money enters.
Not for millions.
Not for jackpots.
Just to prove a point.
To back your call.
To say, “I told you so.”
It’s part of the culture now.
A little skin in the game makes those final minutes louder.
More intense.
More personal.
But when does that shift?
When does culture become habit?

More people are asking for help.
Over 4,600 South Africans were treated for gambling addiction last year.
The year before, it was around 2,600.
That’s not just growth.
That’s a shift.
More people are reaching a point where they can’t continue without support.
At the same time, government is looking to introduce a 20% tax on online gambling profits — partly to curb harm, partly to increase revenue.
So the question becomes:
If more people are only getting help at crisis point…
does intervention start too late?
And can policy alone change behaviour that’s already driven by pressure and desperation?
There’s a bigger conversation here.

💬 Where do you stand?
South Africa wants to tax online gambling. The industry is fighting back
South Africa's government wants a 20% tax on online gambling profits, but the industry is fighting back hard.

They don’t start by asking for help.
They get there.
Late.
Right now, calls for help with gambling have surged by 60% in South Africa.
And when people finally reach out?
88% are already in debt.
Not slipping.
Not struggling.
Already under.
To put the scale into perspective:
South Africa is wagering the equivalent of over R4 billion every single day.
So what does that mean?
By the time someone raises their hand, the damage is already done.
This isn’t early intervention.
It’s crisis response.

You get paid.
You cover what you can.
Then there’s still a gap.
For a growing number of South Africans, that gap is being chased — not closed.
New research shows 4 in 10 working South Africans gamble regularly, not for fun, but to try stretch their income.
What stands out?
It’s not limited.
Yes, younger and lower-income workers are more exposed.
But this behaviour is showing up across the board.
Different incomes.
Same pressure.
At what point does a quick fix become a financial habit?

It doesn’t start with extra money.
It starts with trade-offs.
Groceries… or a chance to make more.
New data shows that South Africans are increasingly diverting everyday spend — including food budgets — toward online gambling.
And it’s not just one group.
Students.
Young professionals.
Breadwinners.
At the same time, online gambling now makes up the majority of activity, with transactions climbing past 60% of all gambling spend.
So what does this signal?
When food money becomes risk money, the conversation changes.
This is no longer about entertainment.
It’s about pressure.
And the decisions that come with it.

It starts as curiosity.
Then it becomes normal.
More young South Africans are experimenting with online wagering — often through their phones.
And the numbers are staggering.
South Africa recorded R1.5 trillion wagered in the 2024/25 financial year, with betting making up 70% of gambling revenue.
Even more worrying?
The National Responsible Gambling Programme has reported a 55% increase in people seeking help.

Big conversations need big stages.
This week, Lombo Mphande steps into one of the most influential gaming platforms on the continent to moderate a critical discussion on responsible gambling and the future of player protection in Africa.
The African market is expanding fast.
Technology is evolving even faster.
The question is — are safeguards keeping up?
From 3–5 March, that conversation takes place at SiGMA Africa 2026 in Cape Town.
If you’re attending, be in the room.

When the student funding body and the national gambling regulator collaborate, it signals something bigger.
NSFAS and the National Gambling Board are moving to curb the use of student allowances on online betting platforms.
Why now?
Because online gambling revenue has exceeded R50 billion, with digital platforms driving rapid growth.
And youth unemployment remains above 40%.
What does this signal for responsible youth gambling in South Africa?
Is this about regulation?
Financial literacy?
Economic pressure?
Or all three?
This conversation is no longer isolated to campuses.
It’s national.

What if the problem isn’t gambling?
What if it’s disclosure?
Young South Africans are told to “play responsibly.”
But are they told the math?
A recent Daily Maverick article argues that long-term loss isn’t a possibility.
It’s built into the system.
That changes the conversation.
Because students aren’t just taking risks.
They’re making decisions without seeing the full equation.
On campuses, we see it.
Hope first.
Understanding later.
Transparency might be the missing piece.
