Wildlife Wednesday: The Bontebok Bounce-Back 🦌🌾
With their rich chestnut coats, bold white blazes, and graceful stride, bontebok are easy on the eyes — but easy to mix up, too. They’re closely related to the blesbok, who you’ll meet in next week’s post!
🌿 Diet: Short grasses — they’re selective grazers found on open plains
👶 Gestation: About 8 months
📉 Fun Fact: Once nearly extinct with fewer than 20 left in the wild, bontebok numbers have made a major comeback thanks to conservation
👨👩👧👦 Herds: 6–25, mostly females and young, with territorial males or bachelor groups
Bontebok are often confused with their cousin, the blesbok — but at Sparta, they’re kept in separate camps to prevent interbreeding. Look for the darker coat, purer white rump, and bold white blaze.
