MBOMBELA – Sometimes the best adventures are not months in the making. Sometimes they begin with a simple decision made out of necessity.

"Let's get out. Let's go ride. Let's go camp!"

And that is exactly what happened.

With little more than a destination in mind, a few essentials packed, and enough meat and refreshments to see the evening through, a small group of adventure riders departed Mbombela (Nelspruit) on Saturday afternoon, heading south towards the magnificent Nelshoogte mountain range.

The journey soon presented an unexpected highlight when the group stopped at Glen Thorpe, where an aerial firefighting helicopter stood ready for duty. Riders had the opportunity to learn more about the vital role these aircraft play during the wildfire season, gaining insight into the specialised equipment carried on board and the demanding work undertaken by the crews who protect South Africa's landscapes.

As the afternoon sun dipped lower, the riders continued deeper into the mountains before arriving at their overnight campsite.

Camp was quickly established. Tents went up, a welcoming fire crackled into life, boots were kicked off, and the first cold refreshments were opened. As darkness settled over the mountains, conversation naturally turned to what adventure riders enjoy most—gravel roads, remote destinations and the bucket-list rides still waiting to be explored.

Stories were shared. Routes were debated. Future adventures were planned.

A hearty campfire meal rounded off the evening before the icy mountain air finally drove everyone into their tents. Temperatures plunged below **-1°C**, making for a long but memorable winter's night under the stars.

Morning arrived with steaming cups of coffee and the familiar question every adventure rider asks:

"Which way do we ride today?"

The answer was simple.

Find as much dirt as possible on the way to Graskop.

The route delivered everything an adventure motorcyclist could hope for—dusty tracks, loose sand, rocky climbs, technical descents, muddy sections, and even the occasional fallen tree blocking the trail. Every obstacle simply became another story to tell.

By late afternoon the riders rolled into Graskop, rewarding themselves with a well-earned lunch at the legendary Harrie's Pancakes before beginning the journey home via the spectacular Long Tom Pass.

The ride back was every bit as memorable, with sweeping mountain roads, breathtaking scenery and countless panoramic views reminding everyone why Mpumalanga remains one of South Africa's premier adventure riding destinations. A refreshing stop at a mountain waterfall provided the perfect opportunity to cool down before the final stretch back to Mbombela.

It may have been only one night away from home, but it delivered everything that defines adventure riding—friendship, exploration, challenging terrain and memories that will last far longer than the kilometres travelled.

The lesson was simple: you don't need a week-long expedition to feed the soul. Sometimes all it takes is one campsite, one campfire, and a willingness to see where the road—or the dirt track—leads.

The next adventure is already calling.

You’ll spend Friday and Saturday riding and training on natural terrain, working on techniques that help you ride with more control, confidence, and flow in real off-road conditions. The weekend wraps up on Sunday morning with breakfast and a final debrief.
