🚨 Divetek’s Diving Tips & Tricks 🚨

EP 1 - Equalisation Techniques 🤿

One of the most important (and most overlooked) skills in diving is proper equalisation. Master this, and your dives become smoother, safer, and way more enjoyable. Get it wrong… and your body will let you know immediately.

🔹 Equalise early – Start before you even descend or the moment your head goes underwater. Waiting for pressure = already too late.
🔹 Equalise often – Don’t just do it once. Make it a habit every few seconds/metres on descent.
🔹 Gentle is key – Never force it. If it’s not going, ascend slightly and try again.
🔹 Use the right technique – Valsalva, Toynbee, or Frenzel - different methods work for different divers. Practice them!
🔹 Descend slowly – Rushing down is the fastest way to run into problems. Control your buoyancy and take your time.
🔹 Stay relaxed – Tension makes equalising harder. Breathe, stay calm, and don’t fight your body.
🔹 Never dive congested – Sinus block = painful dive. If you’re sick, sit it out.

⚠️ Important: If you feel pain, STOP your descent immediately. Ascend slightly until it clears - never push through it.

💡 Pro tip: Pre-equalise on the surface and keep a rhythm as you descend - it becomes second nature with practice.

Remember: Good equalisation = longer, more comfortable dives and happier ears 👌

Got questions or struggling with equalisation? Chat to one of our instructors - we’ve got you 🤝

Stay tuned for the next tip in the series 👀

🌊🐟 FISH FACT MONDAY - Schooling Coachmen 🐟🌊

This week’s video features a massive school of Coachmen (Heniochus diphreutes) moving together in perfect harmony - a truly mesmerising sight on the reef! 🤍🖤

Often mistaken for the iconic Moorish Idol, these fish have some fascinating traits of their own:

🔹 Strength in numbers
Coachmen are one of the few reef fish that regularly form large, tight schools, especially in open water above reefs. This helps protect them from predators and makes for incredible dive moments like the one in today’s video.

🔹 Plankton feeders
Unlike many reef fish that graze on coral or algae, coachmen are primarily planktivores, feeding on tiny organisms drifting in the water column - which is why you’ll often see them hovering mid-water rather than close to the reef.

🔹 Cleaner fish cousins
Juvenile coachmen sometimes act as cleaner fish, picking parasites off larger fish - a role that helps keep the reef community healthy.

🔹 Peaceful and curious
They’re generally calm and will often allow divers to get fairly close, especially when schooling.

🤔 Coachmen vs Moorish Idols – How to tell the difference:

These two are commonly confused, but here’s how to spot the difference underwater:

🔸 Snout shape
Coachmen: Shorter, more “normal” snout
Moorish Idol: Long, tubular snout (perfect for picking food from crevices)

🔸 Schooling behaviour
Coachmen: Often seen in large schools (like today!)
Moorish Idol: Usually seen alone or in pairs

🔸 Body pattern
Coachmen: Slightly less bold pattern, with a more rounded body
Moorish Idol: Striking black, white, and yellow pattern with a more elongated shape

🔸 Dorsal filament (the long “banner”)
Both have it - but Moorish Idols tend to have a longer, more trailing filament

💡 Fun fact: Moorish Idols are notoriously difficult to keep in aquariums due to their specialised diet - while coachmen adapt far more easily!

Next time you’re on a dive and spot that black-and-white banner shape, take a closer look… are you watching a lone icon or a whole school in motion? 👀🐠

🌊🐟 FISH FACT MONDAY - Blue-Spotted Ribbontail Ray🐟🌊

This week’s feature is the absolutely stunning Blue-Spotted Ribbontail Ray (Taeniura lymma) 💙✨ - one of the most recognisable rays on the reef thanks to those electric blue spots and vivid tail!

🎥 In today’s video, we caught this beauty feeding in the sand - a behaviour that’s always fascinating to watch…

Here are some awesome facts about these rays:

🔹 Masters of hiding
Blue-spotted ribbontail rays often spend their time partially buried in sand, with only their eyes and spiracles visible. This helps them stay hidden from predators and ambush prey.

🔹 What were they feeding on?
When you see them digging and blowing sand like in this video, they’re usually hunting for small crustaceans, worms, and molluscs. Think crabs, shrimp, bristle worms, or even small buried fish - all tucked just beneath the sand. They use electroreceptors (similar to sharks!) to detect prey you can’t even see.

🔹 They “flush out” their food
Rays will often flap their wings or jet water into the sand to expose hidden prey before quickly scooping it up with their mouths underneath their bodies.

🔹 Venomous but not aggressive ⚠️
That long tail carries a venomous barb, used only for defence. They’re generally shy and will swim off if given space - most stings happen when they’re accidentally stepped on.

🔹 Homebodies of the reef
These rays usually stick to shallow lagoons and sandy reef flats in the Indo-Pacific, often returning to the same resting spots day after day.

🔹 Night hunters 🌙
While they can be active during the day (as seen here), they’re primarily nocturnal feeders, using the cover of darkness to hunt more effectively.

💡 Diver tip: When exploring sandy patches, always maintain good buoyancy and avoid standing - not just for your safety, but to protect these incredible animals going about their business beneath you.

Have you ever watched a ray feeding like this? It’s like an underwater treasure hunt! 🐠💙
