Collegians FC match review against Forrest Hills
24/02/2017

After a long drive and one of our vehicles going rogue, we all arrived safely to take part in the George Beecroft Tournament. Ready to face Forrest Hills, who are the current league champions. We were about to embark on a historical journey, the first Collegians Football Club, ever. The lads had an air of nervous excitement about them with a touch of confidence kept in check by our manager and club mentor, Vivian Blom. We had the normal locker room banter without the manly rhetoric of female conquests.
The time arrived quickly and the lads took to the field, ready to do battle. The first half began with Collegians kicking off and moving the ball around from one side of the pitch to the other, playing a fast two touch game and keeping a fair amount of possession. The opposition; being the league champions, did not fail to impress. The pace was set and they attacked from all angles but the Collegian lads held their ground with swift defence and the steely command from the captain, Glen Williams. Possession of the ball become easier as the boys settled and it was starting to take shape. In a moment of brilliance, Emmanual Lawa our Cameroonian international took the ball on a run, cutting in from the right wing. Pushing past four defenders to fight his way in between all of Forrest Hills defenders and slot the ball past the keeper with a blistering strike.
The first half was all but over and ended with Collegians 1-0 up.
The second half started with us making one substitution to help bolster our attacking forwards, Shaheen Lisa came in and in a moment of brilliance shocked the keeper with a 25 metre strike which was only seen at the last moment. The boys fought hard and our second sub came in at left back. Luca (the Jack Russell) playing his normal non stop bite your ankle football was working the entire left wing. From defence to the forward position, back and forth non stop. The hard work paid off when one of the Forest Hills subs had enough and chopped him in the box with the ever vigilant ref blowing for a penalty. Joel (the Joker) stepped up to the spot and after a few minutes of discussing where the penalty spot was with the referee, placed the ball and struck with a clinical drive into the bottom of the right side of the net. He held back his emotions and didn't celebrate but there was a noticeable lift of the shoulders.
2-0 Collegians FC.
The game went on with Forest Hills regrouping and valiantly fighting on to have a moment of success with a lapse of concentration coming from our right wing and defence. The ball was pushed through from a great build up and the Forest Hills right wing picked up the ball deep in our defence and bobbed and weaved into a shooting position, driving the ball hard and low which took a nasty deflection and ended in the net.
2-1 Collegians FC (game on)
With 15 minutes to go Luca was again brought down just 5 meters outside the big box. Berrick (the Feisty) stepped up and placed the ball creating a moment of expectation that could be felt in the crowd. He moved to take the kick with an air of certainty and curled the ball beautifully over the wall with enough power to beat the keeper. The ball dipped and swerved but struck the post with such force that the deafening EISH from the crowd reverberated around the ground.
Again our boys lifted their heads and started the build up and it didn't take long with the play being switched from left to right and down the center when Joel hit the ball with great precision and accuracy past the keeper and into the back of the net.
3-1 Collegians FC
He set off with his usual celebration that had the crowd in the palm of his hand. The game continued with some smooth passing and inter play which over shadowed the moments of lack lustre play. The game ended with Collegians FC winning 3-1. It was a great game that was executed in a fine fashion with moments of relaxed concentration and ended with a great result for a team that have only been together for a short time.
Thanks must go to Midas for sponsoring out kit for the tournament as well as Henry and Vivian for putting your time and effort into the team.
Our next match will be against Riverside on the 28/02/2017
