For 35 years, Wayne Riddin has led the aQuellé Midmar Mile with that mindset.

When he took over the event, around 2,000 swimmers were taking part.

Under his leadership, it grew to more than 12,000 swimmers, reached a record 13,555 finishers, and developed into an event recognised around the world.

But perhaps the greater achievement is not simply the numbers.

It is what was created around the Mile.

New concepts. New opportunities. New experiences. New benchmarks. A platform for elite swimmers, everyday swimmers, charities, people with disabilities, families and communities — all while continually looking for ways to move the event forward.

That is what vision does.

It doesn’t ask, “What is everyone else doing?”

It asks, “What hasn’t been done yet?”

Leadership is not about reproducing somebody else’s blueprint. It is about having the courage to draw your own — and then spending years doing the work required to turn that vision into something real.

After 35 years, the challenge remains exactly the same:

Don’t just follow the benchmark.
Set the next one.
