African Waters

With an age spread of 77 years between Jules at 10yrs old and Bill at 87yrs young, week 2 of the 2026 season on the Mnyera and Ruhudji was one for the memory banks. An equally impressive spread of fish between 2lb and 17lbs and, the eclectic african wilderness/wildlife experience the valley offers, contributed to a very special week in camp, on the water, and in the bush. Blog posts are a little behind, but keep an eye out for updated weekly reports next week.

Little bee-eaters were a regular sight along the river, often perched low over the water or moving between the large clay banks where they excavate their nesting burrows.

One of the smaller things you start noticing when you spend enough time drifting these rivers.

Some goodbyes are not goodbyes at all, but more of a handshake or hug of appreciation (for fish, wilderness, wildlife and people), and an affirmation that everyone and everything will be reunited in the future. This was the case as we bid farewell to Chirs and John at Shangaa Tigerfish Camp this week, as they wrapped a classic Tanzania Tigerfish double header (Mnyera and Ruhudji River followed by Nyerere Dam). It was the perfect start to the season. We are excited to share more as the season progresses.

The first week back on the Mnyera and Ruhudji brought a bit of everything.

Steven got things moving quickly, landing a 14 lb tigerfish in his first ten minutes of day one. From there, Ron and John added some good fish of their own as the week unfolded.

But, as is often the case in Tanzania, plenty happened away from the fishing too. Wildlife along the rivers, time around camp, a walk to the waterfalls and evenings spent beside the water.

A good first week back.

The calls of African grey parrots overhead are a familiar part of mornings around Sette Cama.

Worth turning the sound on for this one.

Some weeks at Sette Cama are about finding the windows.

This one came down to the tides. Tarpon feeding in knee-deep water, mullet being pushed against the bank, and very short periods where everything seemed to happen at once.

Every guest had a chance at a tarpon. Some stuck. Plenty didn’t.
