Following recent incidents involving cyclists and runners sharing the same spaces, it's time to remind everyone how we can train together safely.
As more people use Cape Town’s infrastructure for running and cycling, clear boundaries and mutual respect are essential to prevent collisions and keep our sporting community safe.
At Stay Wider of the Rider, we advocate for safety across all disciplines. To ensure everyone gets home safely after a workout, simply follow these rules:
𝗗𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗖𝘆𝗰𝗹𝗲 𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗲𝘀 (𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝗟𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹)
• 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗨𝘀𝗲: These painted or green lanes are legally set aside as exclusive transit paths for pedal cyclists.
• 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗶𝘅: Pavement Priority. Where a dedicated cycle lane runs adjacent to a standard sidewalk, runners and pedestrians are expected to use the sidewalk.
𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗡𝗠𝗧 𝗪𝗮𝗹𝗸𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 & 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻𝗯𝗲𝗹𝘁𝘀
• 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗨𝘀𝗲: Promenades, park pathways, and combined greenbelts are built for multi-user non-motorised use.
• 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗶𝘅: Courtesy and Right of Way. Cyclists should slow down and signal when passing. Runners and walkers should keep left and avoid occupying the full width of the path.
Road safety isn't about claiming territory; it’s about using the infrastructure as intended so everyone can enjoy their sport safely.
Please share this with your local running clubs, cycling groups, and training partners!
