Neurological conditions affect the way the brain and nervous system communicate with the body. This impacts muscle control, coordination, balance, posture, and the ability to perform everyday tasks with confidence.

We offer specialized exercise therapy for a range of neurological conditions, including Parkinson's disease, stroke recovery, multiple sclerosis, and other disorders that affect movement and physical function.

Our approach is grounded in an understanding of neuroplasticity, the brain's ability to adapt and form new pathways with the right stimulus. Specific, repetitive, goal-directed movement is one of the most effective ways to promote this adaptation.

Every patient is assessed individually, and every program is designed around their unique presentation, their abilities, and their goals.

If you are managing a neurological condition and want to know how movement therapy can support your quality of life, we are ready to have that conversation.

Cervicogenic headaches - headaches that originate from the neck - are far more common than most people realise. They are also frequently misdiagnosed or self-treated without addressing the actual cause.

These headaches typically present at the base of the skull, spread to the temples or behind the eyes, and often feel worse with sustained postures like sitting at a screen. They are caused by dysfunction in the upper cervical joints and the muscles that attach around them.

Forward head posture, a stiff upper thoracic spine, and overactive neck extensors all contribute to this pattern. And in our current screen-heavy world, this has become extremely common.

Movement therapy focused on restoring cervical mobility, improving postural control, and releasing tight surrounding musculature can make a significant difference.

If you suffer from regular headaches, your neck deserves a closer look.

One of the most common questions we get: how long will this take?

The honest answer is that it depends on where you are starting from, how consistently you train, and how well you recover. But here is what the research tells us in general terms.

In the first two to four weeks of a new program, your strength gains come almost entirely from neurological adaptations. Your brain is learning to recruit muscle fibres more efficiently. Visible muscle growth comes later.

By six to eight weeks, with consistent effort, most people begin to notice meaningful differences in strength and movement quality. By twelve weeks, the results are usually significant.

The keyword is consistent. Three sessions a week, done well, will always outperform six sessions done poorly.

Progress is rarely linear. But it is always happening if you show up.

If you are a Discovery Health member on a Vitality plan, you may want to do a Vitality Fitness Assessment.

The Vitality fitness assessment includes a comprehensive evaluation of your current physical health, including cardiovascular fitness, flexibility, strength, and body composition. Once completed, it contributes to your Vitality points and gives you a detailed picture of where your health stands and where to focus.

But beyond the points, the value is in the information. Knowing your actual fitness levels, not just a general estimate, gives you something concrete to work with. It tells you what is strong, what needs attention, and where health risks may be building quietly in the background.

We are registered to conduct Discovery Vitality fitness assessments at our Plettenberg Bay practice.

If you are a Vitality member and have not yet done your assessment this year, give us a call and we will book you in.

Most people never think about how they breathe. But your breathing pattern has a direct impact on spinal stability and pain.

Your diaphragm is part of your core. When it functions correctly, it creates intra-abdominal pressure that supports the spine during movement and load. When breathing is shallow, rapid, or restricted, the diaphragm does not descend fully. This reduces core stability and forces other muscles to compensate.

People who breathe predominantly into their chest often have chronic tension in their neck and shoulders, reduced lumbar stability, and a higher sensitivity to pain.

Learning to breathe well is one of the simplest and most powerful things you can do for your movement health. It is also one of the first things we address when working with patients who have persistent pain.

Your breath is a tool. Let us teach you how to use it.

Performance improvements do not only happen in the gym. They happen when your body learns to move more efficiently, generate force in the right sequence, and hold up under the specific demands of your sport.

Our sports performance program uses movement analysis to identify where your body is leaving gains on the table. Poor hip control during a sprint. Limited thoracic rotation affecting your swing. Weak single-leg stability reducing your landing mechanics. These are the kinds of details that separate good athletes from great ones.

We work with runners, cyclists, swimmers, surfers, golfers, and team sport athletes across all levels. Whatever your sport, we help you train smarter, move better, and stay on the field longer.

If you want to know exactly where your movement is limiting your performance, come in for an assessment. You might be surprised what we find.

A proper warm-up is one of the most undervalued parts of any training session. And yet most people either skip it or go through the motions without it doing much at all.

A five-minute jog and a few arm circles is not a warm-up. It is a habit.

An effective warm-up activates the specific muscles you are about to use, increases joint mobility through the ranges you will be working in, elevates your core temperature, and prepares your nervous system for the demands ahead.

Dynamic movements like hip circles, controlled leg swings, banded glute activation, and thoracic rotations are far more effective than static stretching before exercise. In fact, static stretching before loading can temporarily reduce muscle force output.

Warm up with purpose. Your body will perform better and thank you later.

Getting injured is frustrating enough. Going back too soon and reinjuring yourself is worse.

The goal of sports injury rehabilitation is not just to get you out of pain. It is to return you to full performance with a body that is more resilient than it was before the injury. That means addressing not just the injured tissue, but the strength imbalances, movement patterns, and training loads that may have contributed to the injury in the first place.

At our practice, we treat all types of sports injuries, from ankle sprains and hamstring tears to rotator cuff problems and stress fractures. We assess the whole movement chain, build a structured return-to-sport program, and guide you through every phase of recovery.

Whether you are a competitive athlete or someone who simply wants to stay active, you deserve a recovery process that is specific, progressive, and built around your goals.

Stop guessing when it is safe to go back. Let us tell you exactly where you are and how to get there.

One of the most common mistakes people make with knee pain is focusing all their attention on the knee itself.

In many cases, the knee is just where the pain shows up. The actual problem is above or below it.

Weak glutes change how your hip controls the femur. A stiff ankle alters how your foot absorbs force. Tight hip flexors affect the alignment of your entire lower limb. All of these forces converge at the knee, and when they are imbalanced, the knee suffers the consequences.

Treating only the knee without addressing the rest of the chain is why so many people get temporary relief but keep coming back with the same problem.

A full movement assessment looks at the whole picture. If your knee pain keeps returning, it is time to find out what is really driving it.

Compensation is your body's survival mechanism. When one area is weak, tight, or injured, another part picks up the slack. It is clever in the short term. It becomes a problem over time.

Here are three common signs:

1. One shoulder sits higher than the other, even when relaxed.
2. You naturally lean or twist slightly when squatting or bending.
3. You consistently feel pain on one side only, even during bilateral exercises.

These patterns rarely fix themselves. They become habitual, reinforced by movement every single day. Over time, the compensating areas get overloaded and start to break down too.

The fix is not more stretching or more strengthening in isolation. It is identifying the root cause and addressing the entire movement chain.

That is exactly what we do. Come in and let us take a look.
