With 564 entries, this will undoubtedly be the largest number of entries ever recorded for a Greco-Roman event held in South Africa. 🇿🇦

In the buildup to the event, we will be bringing you a little history and some interesting facts about Greco-Roman wrestling.
🔥🔥🔥

Whoop whoop, looking forward to this event.

History of Greco-Roman wrestling:

Ancient Origins

Wrestling is one of the oldest sports in human history, dating back thousands of years. Forms of wrestling existed in:

* Ancient Egypt
* Mesopotamia
* Ancient Greece

The Greeks considered wrestling an essential part of physical education and military training. Wrestling became one of the original sports of the Ancient Olympic Games in 708 BC.

Ancient Greek wrestling focused heavily on:

* Throws
* Balance
* Technique
* Physical dominance

The Romans later adopted Greek wrestling traditions and spread them throughout the Roman Empire.

The Birth of Modern Greco-Roman Wrestling

Despite the name, modern Greco-Roman wrestling is not exactly the same as the wrestling practiced in ancient Greece or Rome.

The modern style was developed in 19th century France by a wrestler named Jean Exbrayat and others who wanted a more disciplined and “classical” style of wrestling inspired by ancient traditions.

The style became known as:

* “French Wrestling”
* Later “Greco-Roman Wrestling”

The term was used to connect the sport to the ideals of classical Greek and Roman athleticism.

Greco-Roman wrestling is unique because:

* Wrestlers may only attack the upper body
* Holds below the waist are forbidden
* Trips using the legs are illegal
* Emphasis is placed on:
* Throws
* Lifts
* Explosive upper-body techniques

This creates the dramatic, high-amplitude throws for which the sport is famous.

Olympic History

Summer Olympic Games included Greco-Roman wrestling in the very first modern Olympics in Athens in 1896.

It has remained one of the core Olympic combat sports ever since (except for the 1900 Olympics where it was absent).

South Africa:

South Africa has always been a wrestling culture dominated by Freestyle wrestling and have not had much success as a Greco-Roman nation.

South Africa’s first ever World Greco-Roman medal was won by Carel Crous in the 57kg weight category, Carel claimed the silver medal at the 1998 Cadette World Championships🥈🇿🇦

In 2017 Willem Putter, South Africa’s most decorated wrestler, became South Africa’s first ever world champion when he defeated Nikolai Kazakov a multiple Greco Roman world champion at the Masters World Championship in Plovdiv, Bulgaria 🥇🇧🇬🇿🇦
