KBC AGM - 2026: Thursday 17 September

The highly anticipated AGM delivered big energy, and a new leadership team ready to take the club into 2027.

President's year-end message: (as taken from his memo which was prepared for the evening)

It has been a very strong year on the greens with excellent results in league, cup and other competitions which Sean will cover in more detail a bit later.

Our newer players have improved remarkably and our experienced members continue to set the standard. All matches were played fairly and with pride.

Off the green, we installed new car park lighting, upgraded the clubhouse security gate, and put a new roof and guttering on the ladies’ room.

Huge thank you to the outgoing Committee, Peter May (Treasurer), Sean Wiblin with Allan Sheridan and Avice Steenkamp(Club Captains), Andy Hough, Denny Richardson, Ambrose and Zulu,(Ground staff) Craig Gibson (Bar), Mike Ryan (Novice, weekly reports) Judy and Jonty Alexander (Club singles championships), Andries, Niki and MC (Trivia and Bingo evenings, Cypi Guard (Night bowls), Kerry Ann Tyndall and Margaret Stegmann for assisting Peter to balance the books. Also a big thank you to all the other volunteers for their help during the year.

Our exciting new Junior Bowls project is underway, thanks to support from Kowie Foundation School and considerable sponsorship from Edge Financial Group, Cosihome and an anonymous member.
Volunteers on Wednesdays are needed urgently to help further coaching to enable this project to grow.

Huge thank you to our sponsors: Pam Golding Properties - Port Alfred, My SPAR Rosehill Prestons Liquor Stores, The Local Choice Pharmacy Leach, Warwick Wealth, Pick n Pay Port Alfred and other smaller sponsors for our weekly Tabs competitions. Without these generous sponsors, our club would battle to survive.
Dave ended his message by wishing the incoming 2026/7 committee well, and reiterated that Kowie Bowls Club's strength was its community.

He then invited all attending members to enjoy the plates of snacks that were provided and have a drink on the clubs account, after the announcement of the new committee.

Weekly report by our scribe Mike Ryan

There was no bowling at the club to report on this week due to record levels of persistent intermittent rain over the past two months, so the greenkeepers took the decision to carry out urgent maintenance on soil conditions on "B" and "C" greens. The floodlit "A" green remains on the recovery list for the time being which is going to hamper the Night Bowls competition program for the upcoming round in 2 week’s time. Unfortunately, the competition can only accommodate 14 teams this round, as the C green is the only other floodlit green at the club. The competition convenor, Cyprian Guard, will be notifying the 14 teams who will be taking part in this round in due course.

With greens being any bowls club's biggest investment, this decision was made in the interest of the long-term health of the greens.

Due to the closure of our greens for the week, our members accepted the invitation from Port Alfred Bowls Club and turned out in force on Saturday afternoon to enjoy a wonderful afternoon of bowls. We were warmly welcomed, and we thank our hosts for their superb hospitality and kind invitation.
After the recent rainy conditions, the greens were in excellent condition and played beautifully, while the background music made for a relaxed and most enjoyable afternoon.
Sincere thanks to everyone at Port Alfred Bowling Club for a memorable day. We look forward to hosting you in return soon.

Lastly, well done to Cypi, Andries, MC and "Piet Skiet" for winning the Kaisers Beach Classic last weekend. Well done in keeping our club’s flag flying high.

EP Fours FINALS - Graaff Reinett:

Congratulations to Jonty Alexander, Andrew Meyer, Peter May and Greg Thomas who claimed the bronze medal at the Eastern Province Fours Tournament in Graaff-Reinet this past weekend. Adding to the achievement, the side recorded the rare feat of a "perfect eight" (full house) on the 9th end in their match against Victoria Park, the highlight of a very successful away trip. Well played to all four.

After the final bowl had been delivered and thirsts quenched, members dashed home for a quick shower before returning to a beautifully decorated hall, ready for an evening of glitz, glamour and well-deserved accolades. 🎉

With a **smart-casual** dress code, the hall was transformed into a kaleidoscope of fresh Spring colour 🌷🌺, with our ladies looking particularly fabulous and adding plenty of elegance to the occasion!

🎤 **Club Captain Sean Wiblin** was the evening's masterful MC, guiding proceedings with his usual poise and professionalism.

🏅 The presentation of **medals, trophies, cups and Club Championship titles** was a wonderful reminder of the dedication, commitment and sporting achievements of our members throughout the year. Each recipient was warmly applauded as they stepped forward to receive their well-earned recognition. 👏👏

🍽️ **Dinner was another highlight of the evening!**
A huge thank you to **Andries Bezuidenhout and his team from My Pond Hotel** for serving up a delicious feast. The lasagne, fresh green salad and warm bread rolls were followed by a superb malva pudding and vanilla custard. Absolutely delicious! 😋

🌟 **And then came the highlight of the evening…**

The prestigious **JEAN LOUW AWARD** 🏆 — the highest honour bestowed by Kowie Bowls Club — was unanimously awarded to our outgoing Club President, **Dave Thomas**.

Dave was recognised for his **exceptional service, dedication and tireless efforts**, going far above and beyond the call of duty throughout the year.

The announcement was met with the **longest and most heartfelt applause of the evening**. 👏❤️

📸 And, of course, no special occasion at Kowie would be complete without our very own near-professional photographer, **Kerry Tyndall**, capturing all the winning moments and memories! Thank you, Kerry, for ensuring the evening will be remembered long after the last bowl has been delivered. 📷✨

A huge thank you also goes to **all the members who played a part in making the evening such a memorable success**. There are simply too many of you to mention individually — but **you know who you are!** ❤️

🥂 **Congratulations to all our award winners, and a very special congratulations to Dave Thomas on receiving the Jean Louw Award!**

What a wonderful way to celebrate another year of **Kowie Bowls, friendship and achievement!** 💚🎉
