Formula 1 to return to Africa with 10-year Rwanda deal

Formula 1 is officially returning to Africa after announcing a 10-year agreement with Rwanda to host the African Grand Prix. The first race is expected in the early 2030s, once a new purpose-built circuit in Bugesera has been completed.

The circuit will be located near Rwanda’s capital, Kigali, and the new Bugesera International Airport, approximately 40 kilometres south of the city. Former F1 driver Alexander Wurz’s WurzDesign is leading the circuit’s design, which aims to use the area’s natural landscape and elevation changes to create a challenging racing experience.

The announcement was made in Kigali in the presence of Rwandan President Paul Kagame, Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali and FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem.
The agreement marks a historic moment for the sport. Africa has not hosted a Formula 1 race since the 1993 South African Grand Prix at Kyalami, near Johannesburg.

Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton has repeatedly called for Formula 1 to return to Africa. The Rwanda agreement will also mean that the championship is set to race on every inhabited continent.

Rwanda’s successful bid puts the country ahead in the race to bring Formula 1 back to the continent, while recent efforts to secure a South African Grand Prix at Kyalami or elsewhere have yet to produce a confirmed agreement.
