THE GREATER GOOD | One of the good things about living at Sardinia Bay Golf & Wildlife Estate - and there are several - is that nothing is ever done without the buy-in of the residents.

When the need for a new borehole arose towards the end of 2025, everyone on the estate was consulted before the go-ahead was given.

Sards may be expansive but it is also a tightly-run ship, especially when it comes to matters affecting everyone and everything on the property.

HOLE LOT OF HISTORY | The spot that marks Sardinia Bay Golf & Wildlife Estate today was once occupied by rolling farmlands and related structures.

As the property transformed into one of the most respected gated communities in the Eastern Cape over the past decade, many of the old had to make way for the new.

But the vintage borehole on the property stubbornly kept on serving with distinction until its unfortunate collapse last year. Bringing it back to life wasn't an option as it had already overstayed its "guaranteed" welcome.

Its replacement scouts for and sucks up water five times deeper under the turf than its predecessor and has a "promised" lifespan that will see it gurgle up water for several generations to come.

Sards really has a fascinating history.

KEEPING IT FLUID | Water is life and life abounds at Sardinia Bay Golf & Wildlife Estate.

It is therefore no surprise that the HOA went underground to make a considerable investment in the resource as well as infrastructure that channels it to all the right places.

Aside from the fresh new borehole, specially-constructed dams being topped up via the estate's wastewater plant serve as watering spots for an entire ecosystem of animals.

GREEN IS ALL AROUND | The Eastern Cape's dry spells can be brutal - just ask any establishment responsible for manicuring a golf course.

Save for the well-watered tee boxes and greens at Sardinia Bay Golf & Wildlife Estate, the fairways have always been a dead giveaway to any lack of rain in the Gqeberha area.

However, with the new borehole now online, residents and players can look forward to verdant beauty from tee to green and everywhere inbetween throughout the year.

HOT PROPERTY | The lifecycle of properties dictates that homes - new or used - will be sold to new owners at some point.

In an estate like Sards, the latter usually pop up when people in their later years look for smaller houses or relocate to be closer to their grandchildren.

Homes in this category are like hen's teeth and potential buyers should be ready to move quickly when they become available.

As for the former, there is always Phase 4 (currently under construction and overlooking several ponds) to consider.

REED 'EM & SWEEP | The ponds at Sardinia Bay Golf & Wildlife Estate have been given a proper spring clean.

However, not everything has been removed.

The property's water features double as evaporation dams to get rid of grey water previously used to irrigate the golf course.

The reeds in the ponds are a vital part of the system's filtration process and have therefore largely escaped the "chop".

DAM IT | Even paradise needs a bit of ingenuity once in a while.

Reviving five man-made ponds on Sardinia Bay Golf & Wildlife Estate has meant repairing damage caused by animals' hooves to a layer of plastic.

Enter a wonder product that expands when it gets wet, sinks to the bottom and covers any cracks it can find in the water feature's armour.

It's nature-meets-science at its very best.

LET'S ROCK & ROLL | When people ask what lies behind the success of Sardinia Bay Golf & Wildlife Estate as a gated community the answer always comes back to meticulous planning.

Nothing is ever done without the final outcome in mind and the 100-hectare property's ponds are a case in point.

When introduced eight years ago, one of the goals was to establish habitats for the lizards, frogs and insects that were noticeably absent - interestingly, due to a lack of rocks in the area.

Today, it is rare not to hear an amphibious choir or other little creatures rocking and rolling in delight way into the night.
