When a seasoned karateka bows deeply in salute, what we witness is not merely a gesture of etiquette but a profound expression of love and reverence for the art. In that moment of lowering the head, there lies a humility forged through years of discipline, a silent tribute to the spirit of karate—respect, humility, and the relentless pursuit of excellence.

In karate, hands-on correction and live demonstrations by the instructors are essential for mastering technique and developing proper form. Through direct guidance, students gain a deeper understanding of movement, precision, and discipline, ensuring they build a strong foundation in their training.

Kyoshi Claude Johnson 8th Dan in Karate and 5th Dan in Kubudo, has made a substantial contribution to the development and promotion of traditional Okinawan Karate in South Africa. His efforts have provided students with the opportunity to train in an authentic martial arts system while fostering discipline confidence, and personal growth.

In 1991 Kyoshi Johnson identified the limitations faced by South African karate practitioners due to the lack of international recognition. Determined to address this challenge he led a group of senior practitioners to the United States to explore martial arts systems that could better serve their need. Understanding that the origins and deepest knowledge of karate resided in Okinawa, Japan, he traveled there in 1992 to enhance his skills and understanding.

While in Okinawa, Kyoshi Johnson trained under the esteemed Grandmaster Shuguro Nakazato, 10th Dan, founder of Shorinryu Shorinkan. This formative experience provided him with a profound connection to traditions and principles of Okinawan karate. In 1994, he successfully established Shorinryu Shorinkan in South Africa, securing direct affiliation with its Okinawan headquarters. His dedication to the art was further recognized when he was appointed President of Shorinryu Shorinkan South Africa.

Over the years, Kyoshi Johnson has undertaken numerous visits to Okinawa, maintaining a close relationship with the island's grandmasters. His connection with the Nakazato family, now led by Grandmaster Minoru Nakazato, 10th Dan, reflects mutual respect and a shared commitment to preserving the rich heritage of Shorinryu Karate.

In recognition of his significant contributions to the promotion of Shorinryu Shorinkan, Kyoshi Johnson's name has been engraved on the commemorative monument of Grandmaster Shuguro Nakazato in Naha, Okinawa - a meaningful acknowledgement of his dedication and achievements.

Kyoshi Johnson's dojo serves as a center for both physical training and personal development. through his teachings, the legacy of Okinawan karate continues to thrive in South Africa, ensuring that future generations benefit from this enduring tradition.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Kyoshi Pat Haley from the USA for his pivotal role in facilitating our introduction to the Nakazato family in Okinawa. His contribution has been instrumental in establishing the connection that allows us to preserve and promote the authentic traditions of Shorinryu Karate.
