The High Performance Institute of Sport (HPI) is located on the Potchefstroom Campus of the North-West University.

Potchefstroom has become the preferred training venue for many international, national and local sports teams and individuals.

Five NWU athletes proudly represented South Africa at the World Athletics U20 Championships, held in Oregon, USA. 🇿🇦🌎

Jan-Hendrik Heymans delivered an outstanding performance in the men’s javelin, winning the qualification with a throw of 76.02m (1st) before going on to claim Gold in the final with an incredible 80.50m (1st).

Werner Gouws competed in the men’s 800m, running 1:47.54 (3rd) in the heats before clocking 1:48.89 (5th) in the semi-final.

Marine Grobler produced a strong performance in the women’s javelin, throwing 51.59m (4th) in qualification before finishing 6th in the final with 51.33m.

Andrea Steynberg lined up in the women’s 1500m, finishing her heat in 4:26.33 (9th).

Bertus van der Linde competed in the men’s 1500m, finishing his heat in 3:57 (11th).

A proud moment for NWU as our athletes took on the world’s best and represented the university on the international stage. 💜 Congratulations to all five athletes on an incredible achievement! 🇿🇦💪

Four NWU athletes proudly represented their countries at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. 🇿🇦🇳🇿

Ethan Olivier and Franco Le Roux both produced outstanding performances, finishing 4th in their respective events.

Liezel Gouws also delivered a strong performance, finishing 7th.

Bradley unfortunately did not get the opportunity to contest his event after a false start.

Alongside our athletes, Tracey Olivier represented as Team Manager, while Shaun Bownes took on the role of Coach.

A proud moment for NWU, the HPI and everyone involved in supporting these athletes on the international stage.

Congratulations to all our athletes, coaches and team staff on representing NWU with pride. 💜

The Eden Street Mile Series wrapped up in spectacular fashion with thrilling races in Oudtshoorn and Hartenbos. NWU’s Keanu Domingo stole the show, claiming victory in both legs of the Senior Men’s race, finishing in 3:53.5 in Oudtshoorn and 4:06.5 in Hartenbos.

In the Women’s Open race, Andrea Steynberg continued her winning streak, clocking 4:54.0 in Hartenbos after dominating the Youth Girls race with 4:48.5 just two days prior.

The Youth Boys saw Bertus Van Der Linde secure back-to-back wins, while Thinus Erasmus impressed with a double win in the Junior Men’s category, including a stunning sub-4-minute performance—an incredible feat for a junior athlete. Young Talent ID Boys’ category saw Rosco Hutchinson shine with two wins of his own.

Congratulations to all participants for their outstanding efforts throughout the series, and a special thank you to the Eden Street Mile Series for showcasing such remarkable talent. Wishing everyone a joyful and restful festive season ahead!
