The High Performance Institute of Sport (HPI) is located on the Potchefstroom Campus of the North-West University.

Potchefstroom has become the preferred training venue for many international, national and local sports teams and individuals.

NWU CROWNED 2026 USSAS CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONS!

North-West University has been crowned the 2026 USSAS Cross Country Overall Champions following two strong days of racing at the USSAS Cross Country Championships, hosted at CPUT Bellville Campus in Cape Town.

NWU finished 1st overall, ahead of Tuks in second and UJ in third. Across the two days, the team delivered strong individual performances, multiple team podium finishes and impressive results in both the short and long mixed relays.

Two days of racing. One team. One overall championship. Proudly representing NWU! 💜

NWU athletes secured four individual medals at the SA Cross Country Championships at Curro Hazeldean, alongside multiple team medals for Athletics Central North West (ACNW).

Tatai Amogaleng won gold in the Men’s U23 4km, clocking 11:34.45 in his first senior national championships. His performance, alongside Kruger WJ, contributed to ACNW’s bronze medal in the Men’s U23 4km team competition.

In the Women’s 4km, Danielle Verster took silver in 13:43.83, while Alri Verster claimed silver in the Women’s U23 4km in 14:28.85.
Chantel Makkink added a bronze medal in the Women’s U23 2km, finishing in 7:15.45.

The Women’s U23 4km team also secured silver for ACNW, with Alri Verster, Leeann Marx and Katelyn Steenkamp combining for the podium finish.

In the Men’s 10km, Elroy Gelant, Mohammed Batsi, Lutho Timati & Avuma Pheza was part of the ACNW team that claimed bronze.

A strong medal haul for our NWU athletes at national level, with individual success complemented by team podium finishes for ACNW.

Five NWU athletes proudly represented South Africa at the World Athletics U20 Championships, held in Oregon, USA. 🇿🇦🌎

Jan-Hendrik Heymans delivered an outstanding performance in the men’s javelin, winning the qualification with a throw of 76.02m (1st) before going on to claim Gold in the final with an incredible 80.50m (1st).

Werner Gouws competed in the men’s 800m, running 1:47.54 (3rd) in the heats before clocking 1:48.89 (5th) in the semi-final.

Marine Grobler produced a strong performance in the women’s javelin, throwing 51.59m (4th) in qualification before finishing 6th in the final with 51.33m.

Andrea Steynberg lined up in the women’s 1500m, finishing her heat in 4:26.33 (9th).

Bertus van der Linde competed in the men’s 1500m, finishing his heat in 3:57 (11th).

A proud moment for NWU as our athletes took on the world’s best and represented the university on the international stage. 💜 Congratulations to all five athletes on an incredible achievement! 🇿🇦💪

Four NWU athletes proudly represented their countries at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. 🇿🇦🇳🇿

Ethan Olivier and Franco Le Roux both produced outstanding performances, finishing 4th in their respective events.

Liezel Gouws also delivered a strong performance, finishing 7th.

Bradley unfortunately did not get the opportunity to contest his event after a false start.

Alongside our athletes, Tracey Olivier represented as Team Manager, while Shaun Bownes took on the role of Coach.

A proud moment for NWU, the HPI and everyone involved in supporting these athletes on the international stage.

Congratulations to all our athletes, coaches and team staff on representing NWU with pride. 💜
