Continuity and flow of possession for a long duration does bring a sense of control. Possession of the ball psychologically frustrates opposition, because they cannot do what they want, players also get tired faster out of possession. Continuously chasing the ball can lead to frustration, lapses in concentration, and eventual mistakes that the team in possession can exploit.

Another benefit of controlling possession is the fact that opposition can't score without having the ball, it is surely the best way of defending. Players use more energy when they are not in possession, constantly moving to close down spaces, intercept passes, and press the player with the ball. Over time, this can lead to fatigue, which might reduce the effectiveness of the opposition's counterattacks or offensive plays.

Seven simple ideas for coaches that may help improve players’ and teams’ abilities to compete…

1. It's my contention...whether accurate or not...that the most important objective for competitors on the pitch, the court or the course is to manage themselves.

Arguably, the most powerful thing in the heat of battle is a competitor's nervous system. It will kill you if you let it!

2. Coaches tend to obsess a shared mental model when it comes to the tactical side of the game.

They want their players knowing and understanding the responsibilities of others. But a shared mental model around the mental side of the game seems like a rarity. Yet could be so powerful…

3. Coaches often ask themselves “How can motivate my players for game day?”

Another question is: “How can I help my players motivate themselves for game day?”

Both can work, but I just wonder if the latter is a question that’s broader, deeper, and in the long term can lead to more impactful coaching solutions?

4. Whilst you can change sports competitors’ behaviours through reward and punishment, it's might be that a deeper, longer lasting change in competitive behaviour occurs when you tap into personal qualities such as values, identity,
interest and enjoyment.

These intrinsic factors may be more powerful competition mediators…

5. Questions coaches can ask prior to performance:

“What does your best game look like? Feel like?
“What does your dream game look like? Feel like?
“Who do you want to be when you compete? What does this look like? Feel like?”

Help players rehearse the answer to these questions regularly. Help them negotiate their personal brand of excellence...

6. Coaches: rather than insisting on 'great attitude' on game day, why not seek to understand a player's attitude.

If players engage in unhelpful competitive behaviours then aim to be curious...empathise...help them to problem-solve...seek permission to get team mates to help out.

Insistence can so often lead to resistance!

7. Rather than having posters with motivational quotes adorning the walls of your club, why not have posters with key messages players have created themselves. Why not have tasks, key words, individual responsibilities, group objectives, group and individual strengths…

In this way your walls are displaying the kind of messages that enhance competitive behaviours. That bolster your players’ ability to compete!
