Nearctic — The Sire Nobody Wanted🐎
In 1955, he went unsold at auction with a $35,000 price tag.
That unwanted c**t would become the father of the most influential dynasty in modern thoroughbred history.
Foaled February 11, 1954, bred by E.P. Taylor at Windfields Farm, Nearctic was by the great Nearco out of the Irish mare Lady Angela (by Hyperion). Passed over at the sale, he raced in Taylor's turquoise and gold silks under trainer Gordon "Pete" McCann, debuting with a win at Old Woodbine in May 1956.
At two, he won seven races — four of them stakes — and was named Canada's champion juvenile. At four, he dominated the season: five straight wins to open the year and a track record at the Michigan Mile, earning him the 1958 Canadian Horse of the Year title. He finished his career 21-5-3 from 47 starts.
His real legacy came later — as the sire of Northern Dancer.
Fate sometimes chooses the one nobody else did🐎
